Calling a UK mobile that is abroad

Okay, Im with o2 and have gotten conflicting information. Im in the UK and I have called a UK sim/mobile that is currently in France. One o2 customer assistant said this would just simply come out of my UK allowance--it'd be like calling a UK phone in the UK. Another said I would be charged an international fee. The general consensus online seems to be that it would be like just calling another mobile in the UK (since the other person also has a UK sim). I do not know who to believe right now. At the time of the call I hadn't even realised the person was abroad!

Thanks all!

It would just come out of your inclusive allowances if you are phoning a UK mobile. Any charges for roaming are beared by person receiving the call, although due to EU regulations, it means that there will not be any charge.
  • Thanks! Yeah, I don't get what they were on about really. I tried to clarify it to the person fully so they didn't misinterpret me.

Calls are charged based on the digits that you dial and where you are located when you make the call. Where that call is eventually answered is irrelevant.
  • Yeah, I dont get why they were saying I'd be charged then, when the other mobile had a uk sim. Stupid idiots. Thanks for the reassurance guys!!!

Strange as it may seem, some of those who work in callcentres have little or no idea about the products and services their company offers or how things work. This includes some of those who work for phone companies.

Sometimes misunderstandings can arise in the way customers ask the question. However, I accept it is the advisor's job to translate the question into "network speak", sometimes the trickiest part of the job is to understand what the customer is really asking for.

So how many ways are there to ask for a discount??
  • If you're regularly calling abroad, then you might be better off using an international company that specialises in cheap calls abroad - otherwise it's easy for your phone bill to add up! There are a number of companies who offer something like this, including Lyca Mobile and Vectone Mobile. Personally, I've only ever used Vectone before, but they've always saved me money. Hope this helps!
