in Cutting tax
Until last year , my only contact with the taxman was to throw my P60 into a drawer and forget about it. However due to my husband's death things ar a lot more complex. I am PAYE but now I have his pension and other savings income etc . Could somebody recommend tax software to help me understand my position. Ive been told that Iowe £2k in tax for last year & my personal allowand is now something like £6k. Appreciate any advice . thank you

Taxcalc is the best in my view, consistently tops the ratings on accountancy web and similar sites.Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0

I'm not sure tax software is really going to help. I think what you're really after is someone explaining what has happened and why. The software will simply produce the same calculation (hopefully!) that it seems you have already received.
Appreciate you may not wish to post more info on here but from what you've said so far your income was around £110,000 or you've completely misunderstood something.
Your opening comment, Until last year , my only contact with the taxman was to throw my P60 into a drawer and forget about it. would suggest possibly the latter as HMRC do not provide P60's that is the responsibility of your employer/pension provider (unless of course you happen to work for HMRC ).0 -

Agree with D&C. Post as much detail from HMRC's paperwork as you feel comfortable with - and be ready to be asked to reveal more.
Without that you'll get speculation dressed up as learned opinion - MSE's good at that.0 -

Perhaps the op means that her personal allowance at her employment is now 6000 ish - maybe restricted by the pension? But, as you say , more info needed.0 -

My point exactly - and aren't you (plural) confusing Personal Allowance with PAYE Code?

[Deleted User] wrote:Nope - I was quoting the op. Hopefully, after thirty-five years in tax I know the difference but ... you never know!!!
Hence my (plural). Your (singular) error seems to be taking too literally one who admits to somewhat less than 35 years experience of the subject.
Hence my "raw", by the way.0 -
Hi
First thing I would try would be a polite call to HMRC who have always been helpful.
