OP it isn't software you need it is knowledge. You need to work out if the tax demands are correct. To do this you need to know what your actual income has been for the affected years and then work out how much tax you have paid and how much you should have paid. You could of course employ an accountant, but the first thing you will have to do is tell him/her is as above what your actual income was & how much tax you actually paid.

You could post the figures on here and someone will work it out for you.

I only thought it must be April 1st because someone thought HMRC were helpful, despite a vast body of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

In my view, 80% of the posts on this forum would not exist if it were true that HMRC operated an efficient and helpful operation.

One very important reason not to rely on the "helpfulness" of HMRC is that HMRC accepts no liability whatsoever for the quality of the advice given. There are numerous very harsh cases at the Tribunals every year where taxpayers were given precisely the wrong advice by helpful HMRC staff, only to later discover that it was exactly the opposite of accurate advice in accordance with UK tax law.

The method whereby these people discover their error is, of course, eye-watering tax demands and fines in the post from HMRC. When these cases get to the Tribunals they often go in the favour of HMRC, even though it is clear the judge accepts the sincerity and honesty of the taxpayer.

Do NOT - ever - trust HMRC on any matter. No-one will ever regret this piece of advice.

Chris, have you considered seeking help from a psychiatrist for your rather irrational hatred of HMRC? Or maybe a change of career would help, as you current one seems to bring you in contact with them rather too often for your own good.

I don't think that Chris is at all irrational with regard to HMRC. No doubt on other boards you might get a different impression, but this is Cutting Tax, and HMRC is at the centre of the UK tax system.

And he doesn't exaggerate. They really are totally unfit for purpose. You can argue about what this is down to - but it is a fact. This year it is worse than ever. They've stripped down the staffing - and yet made significant bungles which mean that they will have to do far more manual SA work than should be necessary. Result - months of delay in parsing those returns manually. And why is this? It is because - after 20 attempts - HMRC have failed to produce SA software that works. This is not a difficult task, yet they've failed comprehensively to either get a bit of software that works or - and even more significantly - to build in to the latest version a feature which detects when an online submission will not be processed properly.

    Totally unfit for purpose.

Chris may be extreme in so often venting his frustration on MSE - but irrational? No.
