There are many in your situation, some are in a worse situation in that their offspring are moving away to go to university and therefore have to pay a deposit for university halls or private rentals before that first student loan has arrived.
He should be opening a student bank account, that may very well come with a student overdraft to enable him to bridge the gap before his student loan arrives.
At least he will be given the full student loan with no deduction for assumed parental contribution, that will also enable him to access some funding from the university to help financially. Many students are caught between a system that assesses that the student's parents can should offer some financial help and parents who aren't willing or able to do so.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Thanks for that, good idea to see about opening a student account (although I am not sure if they'll be prepared to grant overdraft facilities yet until place is confirmed? I know Nationwide said he had to wait until the last two months before he starts to be able to open an account there - of course, we are now at that point, I'd just forgotten) - I'd not thought about that though.
I hope you're right about the amounts too - so far, it's only come through as just over £3k, and with my income he should be allowed to borrow a higher amount (grrr, that they took away maintenance grants) - I've submitted an income form, and his letter states "HMRC Sponsor 2 Income Variance exception returned" - which I *think* means they've got it and am guessing this is just a preliminary award? My brain hurts!0 -
Don't forget your son will be living at home with you so the amount he would get would be less than if he was living else where. Thanks for that, good idea to see about opening a student account (although I am not sure if they'll be prepared to grant overdraft facilities yet until place is confirmed? This would be what he's actually going to get. My daughter applied a few weeks ago (2nd year at uni) she heard back from from them very quickly with the amount and payments dates (subject to enrolling at uni in Sept)Thanks for that, good idea to see about opening a student account (although I am not sure if they'll be prepared to grant overdraft facilities yet until place is confirmed? Does he claim pip. It will take some time but he could claim that if he has mental health issues that results in his ability to care for him self to be low and with having pip he is allowed to claim esa as a student.
Also check if he can get disabled students allowance through the uniMortgage free wannabe

It does mean they have received it, but it also means that they disagree with it!
Sponsor 2 is the parent.
income variance means the income has varied from what they were expecting. In this case from what the HMRC records show. They will be asking you for more information to verify the amount you earned. Have you sent a P60 in?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly. Yes, they sent me a form and I returned a P60 + my self assessment form + tax credits awards notice. I am wondering if it varied slightly from the amount I'd entered into the online questionnaire I'd done when he first applied as I didn't have the figures to hand (although I likely overestimated my self assessment than under-estimated)0 -

Thanks, will look into that. At the moment, the people who have been treating him (camhs, and now his psychiatrist) all seem reluctant to label him with a permanent diagnosis - I think they're all waiting to see just how long term it is :-(0 -

I wondered that, but when we did an online checker, it still quoted the higher amount (although I can't remember if it asked where he would be living to be honest)0 -

Max loan for those living at home is £7,097. For those away from home it is £8,430 (£11,002 if in London).I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
