Struggling with a complaint :(

Hope someone can help me with a time consuming complaint -

bought fairy lights and they blew my plug socket, damaged it
have complained in writing to the shop in good time, they had the lights tested by the manufacturer
All this is good but has taken time, but they are saying there is no issue with the lights and I'm sure my home electrics are ok

They now say my complaint can only be continued with the manufacturer - how do I proceed? I am fed up chasing this :(
thanks

    This is tricky.

Have the shop tested the lights and found no fault?

Have you tried the returned lights again?

You have said 'I'm sure my home electrics are ok'.

What does 'they blew my plug socket' mean?

I think your next step is to get your 'plug socket' checked to confirm your home electrics are ok.

OP clearly states that the lights were sent off to the manufacturer who found no fault.

This should have been the OP's first step, of course. It's rare for electrical items to directly damage sockets unless they are overloaded through the use of extensions etc...

OK, perhaps I can re-phrase that...

On return from the manufacturer, did the shop demonstrate the lights working in the shop before handing them back to you?

Why would fairy lights blow a socket? Is there no fuse?

Could it have been the socket that's faulty?

Where did you buy them, have you got a web link to the lights?

So you've had the blown plug face plate assessed by a competent electrician?

No way ANY item plugged in to a fully working system would cause permanent damage, as it should protect against full short circuits.

my guess is the face plate has given up the ghost, which happens, and is nothing to do with the lights.

Well I don't think the lights would have been returned to the manufacturer for one thing.
Nobody returns items to China !!
Probably a loose wire in your socket caused what happened.
  • Thank you for all your replies, the 'plug socket' was melted and the faulty lights remain with the manufacturer.
Should I be pursueing the Shop or the manufacturer? for further assistance?
    thank you

The shop, but only after confirming that your socket is correctly, and securely, wired. Loose connections in a socket will lead to overheating.

Are you going to answer any of the other questions asked?

Anyone in the supply chain can be held responsible for damage a product does (seller, importer, manufacturer) but they're only liable for damage caused by an unsafe product if the damage was more than £275 (not including the item itself).

So you're often best going to the retailer first as you have a contract with them which would cover the item itself and also damage under that amount.
