mulitfuel cooker

Options
Following on from my previous thread for multi fuel stoves....it has been suggested by a fitter that we should consider fitting a cooker stove but would welcome any reviews advise....
We are looking to install a multifuel /solid fuel stove which can also be used for cooking.....the likes of esse etc seem to be out the price range (ATM) but welcome other recommendations...the stove will be fitted into an existing chimney where an aga used to be (many moons ago) so there is a decent space....this stove/oven will also need to provide a decent amount of heat to the large open plan kitchen/diner
TIA

Not in the middle of summer !!

But you could look out for an old Rayburn, they are pretty cheap,
most people don't want the hassle and dirt associated with this
sort of heat, but they really do chuck out tons of heat, and can
also heat your water tank, and a radiator or two...

Oh, and did I mention, you can cook on / in them too ??
    Hobs on top, oven inside...
Ask me how I know :)

Well, Mr.T, what do you need to know, it looks like you have had an Aga
at some time in the past, the Rayburn that is in my kitchen in a very early
model, quite small, rated at 90,000 BTU's, which is a MASSIVE amount
of energy produced !! That presumably is if it's running flat out.....

    (thats about 26 Kw....!! ) :)

My experience is that it runs nicely on a mixture of ovals and anthracite,
and can be kept in overnight once you find a damper setting to control the airflow.
Parts are still easily obtainable, even down here in remote Cornwall,
as there are obviously lots of properties with various models still being used; all I needed to resurrect mine was a new ashpan, that had dissoved with the ingress of rain down an uncapped chimney when not used for a few years, and a new rope seal around the rectangular hob !
You can buy these quite cheaply, the biggest problem is moving one, as it is a dead weight, but that gives good thermal mass, they are massively over engineered, mine dates from the mid 50's, and will outlast me !!!
I regularly boil kettles on it, and save the hot water, it's endless, and use a frying pan or saucepan etc on the hob; the oven will get up to 350F easily,
but I don't cook in it, just warm up CORNISH PASTIES and such..... :)
I would post a photo if I knew how, should you need convincing further !

  • The previous aga was used when I was a small child so although I remember it I have no experience if using one....I was thinking Rayburn for heat and cooking only...totally undecided about the boiler/radiator side of things....do you need a hot water tank with a Rayburn (if not where is the hot water stored) how does the water move round the radiator ?? With a pump ?? Can this be left running over night etc....oh and it's Mrs not Mr ha ha
    TIA

  • Thanks for the link....although I'm not to sure Mr would go for second hand ....don't bother me...he'd probably want new or total refurbish but that's too many pennies for the time being
    Thanks
