Cashpoint Problem

My son took out £120 from the Cashpoint machine, he walked away without taking his money! Realised his mistake within seconds went back and the money was gone and someone else was using the machine, he doesn't think the person using the machine took the money because he wouldn't have had time to put the money away and start to use the machine. Security at the shopping centre told him that the money goes back into the machine if its not taken straight away - anyone have any helpful advice?

ive never heard of money being withdrawn back into the machine.
if thats the case you would need to contact the bank who maintain that cashpoint on monday0 -
If the money is not collected, an ATM does take the money back.
Your son should contact his bank ASAP and let them know what has happened - they will then check the ATM and refund his money..

Yeah, go to the bank (who own the ATM) and tell them.Hi, I've already asked and been granted for permission via PM for a Help for Heroes link. Pfft.

I have actually done this too! It sounds daft I know, but I withdrew cash, then my phone rang and got distracted and by the time I had realised it the cash had been taken back by the machine. A quick call to the bank confirmed that they could tell the cash had not been taken and was refunded to my account straight away.

Which financial institution was involved. Also was it in a branch or at an off-site?
The machine should purge the money and log the transaction as cash not taken. However in some institutions, it is now policy that the money is taken from the customers account even though the machine is aware that it has returned the cash to the purge bin.
This is due to fraudulent activities.......
If the problem occurred in a branch where the atm is serviced by branch staff, then the issue should be resolved within the week when the machine is balanced.
However, if it's at an offsite then be prepared for a wait of up to 4 weeks!!0 -
I have also done this, doh! I just rang the bank and told them and they can check and they refunded me the money no problem. I was really panicking when I did it as well!
Hope he gets it sorted soon!

Cashpoints don't always take the money back. I remember going to a cashpint on a Friday night and there was £50 in £20s and a £10 already sticking out of the slot.
Not a person in sight.

It was at Lloyds cashpoint machine in Meadowhall shopping centre, Sheffield, I think it is manned in the week, his bank is Nat West. He telephoned Nat West this evening and they told him to go into his Nat West branch tomorrow and file an ATM Dispute Form. I hope the machine has taken the money back he is really upset! you learn the hard way don't you?0

Most machines do have a purge facility, so that if you leave it there for more than 20 seconds or so, it presumes you have left it, so takes it back and dumps it into a bin inside. The machine notes this, and when the machine is balanced, they will investigate.
However, it is up to you to ask for the money back! If they say it didn't purge, then the next person may well be the one you need to find!Andy Corbett0
