I've got 2 - hands (old rag optional)
It is not always possible to undo oil filters by hand. Ideally it would be. Some need a socket to get them out as that is how they are designed - my car does.

Funny how all these people suggesting DIYing it and listing what is needed forgot to mention a new sump plug washer........

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

I don't need a new sump plug washer on my Imp, the original is copper and can be re-used indefinitely. ;)

It all depends on what car you have. One of my cars the sump plug has a rubber deal built into it; so it would be wrong to also put a sump plug washer on it.

I've also bought other sump plugs before and the local supplier have only had ones which come with a new washer in one pack (if required).

But not knowing you need a washer certainly doesn't mean you shouldn't do it yourself. Doing it yourself and you know exactly what has been done and how it has been done.

Don't recall ever changing one in the last 40 years (and never any leaks), and probably over 100 oil & filter changes, probably saved a couple of thousands of pounds not having to go to the dealers to buy one each time.....;)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The only time I have "changed" the sump plug washer was on the first service on the current car - it actually came without a washer.

Its good practice to change the washer and plug for the peanuts they cost.

If it's reusable then the answer is obviously I would have thought. If you want to take a chance or gamble for a couple of pound then fine. For a washer alone then its pence.

Not changing them, getting away with it and then thinking this is proof you don't need them means nothing. Bit like saying you never needed a carbon monoxide detector, smoke alarm. detector.

I have worked in the oil industry for 20 years. We use hundreds of rubber seals for filters running crude and refined oil. If your car uses one of these type and you want to take a chance good for you. Heat, moisture, age and pressure will reduce the life. You may well be get away with not replacing every year but longer..............why?

You are not honestly suggesting putting metal to metal is good practice are you?

Let's hope the next person doesn't screw up the oil pan/sump by over-compensating and putting the drain plug on too tight.

It came with the sump washer M I S S I N G having had the last service carried out by Volvo. I bought and put a washer on - hence the "change". Otherwise it wouldn't have been a change would it?
