Certain jobs attract a certain character type. Council and members of parliament attract a character type that is prone to lying and cheating and probably has certain psychopathic traits. The MPs whose sole interests centres around the good of the people are few and far between because the majority of them are self-seeking. MPs like Dennis Skinner, Tony Benn, Alan Johnson et al are few and far between but that is what we are dealing with. It's the same with council officials. Yes we vote them in with the assumption they will deliver good quality municipal services but with the influx of useless immigration policies most councils are swamped. John Reid said when he was made Home Secretary that the immigration service was 'not fit for purpose' and that was 11 years ago. A lot of immigrants do contribute to UK society but housing is stretched beyond belief, schools, aged welfare, mental health welfare, road maintenance (have you seen the amount of potholes), all these services are all stretched. So the councils are forced into making cut-backs and streamlining as much as they can.

You talk about Dickens at lot and most employers in those days were male. Luckily for society since then more and more females have become employers and their characteristics are more benevolent towards employees and can see the bigger picture where society is concerned and are more humanitarian than the testosterone-fuelled drives of the male employers. I've had many bosses over the years of both genders and the best bosses have always been female. I've been a boss myself and as a male in touch with my feminine side always looked after my employees over and above what was required by law.

So I think you'll find in amongst your views on striking that sometimes the welfare of the majority doesn't lie in just striking for the workers' rights, it's more to do with the egos and communistic views of the union officials.
You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

I'm not really sure what this stereotyping of various groups of people has to do with waste collection or workers' rights!

I have no sympathy for the bin men. My sympathies go to the residents.

If there was a law that allows the council to sack the striking bin men/women, I would support it.

There are plenty people who would thank you for the chance to get a job so the striking people can just accept conditions and get on a do their job.

    How many?

How many of them would want to take on that job; emptying bins? How many of them would be willing to work for an employer who is likely to dismiss them at anytime, when yet decide their new working practices don't work and they want to try a yet another new way? How many of them would want to work for an employer who pays their health and safety such little regard?
