asbestos water tank removal?
Comments

As for another poster suggesting asbestos may be harmless to drink, I'm not drinking asbestos and I wouldn't want any kids to be drinking it.
Water companies still have asbestos cement pipes so it's possible that your drinking water has already been exposed to asbestos by the time you get it.0 -
How much does the tank weigh? My local council will take away up to 40kg of asbestos for free, I've just had them collect the sheet of asbestos that was on the floor under my old boiler.0

Thank you jack_pott. I can't find anything on my LA site that hints they offer this service, I'll give them a call tomorrow. Did they pull it out as well?
Did it ever put any of you off buying a place? I hear of mortgages being declined which while mine is okay, I'm considering future saleability. That said, the place isn't riddled with it as far as I know (the investigations will tell me more!)0 -

That's hard to believe.0 -
Asbestos is probably in all house built from the 50's up until when it was banned in 85, it's will be in loads of artex, pipe insulation, garage roofs and many other things.0

KeithP, it was digging around on this site that led me to believe that. I couldn't overly believe it too......but with my current mindset I do tend to go with the worst and believe horror stories. (This house has been one thing after another).0

No, there wasn't any dismantling required, it was just laid on the kitchen floor. It had to be double-wrapped in heavy duty polythene, marked "Asbestos", and then left outside the house for collection on the designated day.
Before I noticed the free service I emailed one of the contractors listed on council's website, but I assume the job was too small to be worthwhile as they never replied.0 -

Just for completeness, 1985 blue and brown was banned, it wasnt until 1999 that white was banned (except a few specialist applications ).
A asbestos water tank is most likely to be white, although asbestos cement can sometimes contain traces of blue / brown.
If I were the OP I would leave the water tank in the loft.YNWA

Nothing to worry about with resale. Many houses contain asbestos, as long as its stable and in good condition it wouldn't be a problem. Ask for an air test from the asbestos removal people. I'm about to rent and have had this done, for my tenants peace of mind as well as my own.
Before you get any work done just consider asbestos, as you have been doing.0 -

.
Have a look at my thread on asbestos, had a cowboy heating installer who broke high content asbestos paneling, and left a broken asbestos flue in my loft. I had to stay out of my house for 10 days until my house was declared safe.
The fact that the heating installer has told you tests should be done to determine what is asbestos, is a good sign. Get a few quotes and go with the one who strikes you as the most careful and knowledgeable.
As long as corners aren't cut and safety is considered, there's nothing to worry about.0
