I'll take this down later but this is an example of what I am dealing with. This is from the veg plot, looking over the middle wall towards the main lawn and borders. Brambles, nettles, and some david austin climbing roses that I heeled in a few years ago that now run for a good six foot each of out of control spiky things. Most of the back is like this. Good for bramble jelly without leaving home I suppose.

We have had rain and hailstones, far too cold to be outside although stray cat assures me it is lovely in the greenhouse.

Sausages and mash kind of weather I think. That said i was just distracted by a tapping on the window, and it was a clearly confused big fat bee.

Actually an army of Orcs tramping through would do it a world of good seaside.

    Today I have:
    • replaced the missing panel in the greenhouse from the last storm. Glad I bought extra poly carbonate stuff last year
    • Snipped some brambles into shorter lengths so at least they are not rooting where they touch the ground
    • Found the rooting powder so I can try and take some honeysuckle cuttings, Christopher Lloyd made it sound so simple
    • Took some photos of some isolated bits of pretty. It isn't all bad and there are some nice mature plants that I put in when we first moved here that are still alive.
    • Polytunnel beds soaked and ready for planting

I remembered why I gave up last year as I limped round the garden - I twisted my knee shifting bags of gravel when we did the tunnel so it wasn't lack of stamina. It took months to heal and then I did my ankle slipping in heeled boots on a wet floor. That was me out of action March - June which explains a lot.

I've kept the SB plates spinning but there is very little else about. A very low income month for me :(

I frittered 99p on a kindle unlimited three month subscription offer, and £2.44 on a neglected garden book - both funded by SBs vouchers.
  • Ahhh Now I see your predicament ..

You did a lot to start reclaiming the garden last year. Go back and look at the photos to remind yourself.

See, I said it was bad :p I'm not one of those annoying people who do 'ignore the mess' when there clearly isn't any.

I know, the polytunnel area got cleared, as did the cabin so they just need a maintenance weed. I did down the side of the tunnel the other week - brambles pushing through the fence from next door. The green waste bins are full and ready to go tomorrow, so I can start all over again.

DS1 birthday this weekend (15!) and I though I had best check that I had actually got a card/some bits to wrap as his actual present still hasn't arrived. Good job I did as there wasn't much, so I ordered a book for DS2 to give him (SB vouchers) and nipped into small town to get him some sweets to wrap and pick up some veg for the weekend.

Aldee easter veg offers excellent value, decent potatoes at 29p - 2.5kg of good sized maris pipers. Mine live in a cloth bag in a dark cupboard so they last really well so I got a couple of bags. Leeks, carrots and parsnips at 19p a pack, and then some shallots from MrL at 29p which will live in the fridge drawer (loose) quite happily, I only used the last couple of Christmas ones a few weeks ago.

I also bought three legs of lamb at £4.49KG in MrL, we both like lamb but its expensive so a rare treat. Beef joints are good value too at £4.79/KG, but I still have tough beef in the freezer so I resisted. I'm not keen on the shrink wrap 'roasting beef' anyway, you never know quite what you are getting, and the last lot has been fairly poor even when I have chopped and stewed it. If I had to choose I would buy it from Asdar as they at least name it on the bags so you can have a rummage for topside.

  • I can see it's a work in progress, but I'm very envious of the size of your garden and the lovely church view. I would love a big garden.

However I can see it's a lot of work to keep tidy . You need an army of workers with machetes to clear it for you. It's an awful lot of work for one person.

However it must be full of surprises, you may find an Mayan temple in there one day :rotfl:.

Brmable clearance is a tough gig...remember it well when we were clearing an allotment space a few years ago. Worth it, but OH spent many hours doing it...(I largely supervised :p)

Hope the weather turns for the better and you can get out there although planting out some cuttings will be good in the meantime. Am also envious of your garden and the rural aspect :)

    Have a great weekend x

:hello: hello brizzlegirl Its a medium sized village rather than rural - but we are in the conservation bit and there are quite a few trees so it feels green in the short view.

Thanks DIA - it is a lovely space when it is looked after. It will be lovely again.

Great minds think alike HHOD, OH bought some machete weed things last year, they frighten the life out of me but they do work.
  • As long as OH actually USES the machete things and doesn't chop his leg off . He may need supervision...
