Is there a reason other then to be awkward why Natwest don't put your account number and sort code on your debit card.

I imagine it makes the card cheaper to produce, for a start
.
Would be damn annoying though.0 -
When I worked in a NatWest, they were on the card but it wasn't obvious. They were part of the big number across the top, with the sort code and account number separated from the rest by bright green dots.
Don't they do this any more?0 -
I'm sure I read it was for "security reasons", but I dunno what they areMurphy's No More Pies Club #209

No, they're not part of the card number any more.0 -
RBS don't put the account number on the card either.
My HSBC account has the last 9 digits of the card number as the account number and the six digits before that are the sort code.0 -
Those details never needed to be on the Debit card to start with, so I don't know why the likes of Barclays etc still put them there.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0

it's added security measures so your card is not holding both your name & account number (the less info you give fraudsters the better), & your sort code IS on there in the bottom left hand corner - why do you need your account number on there?
having been a victim of fraud, mainly with chq bk & card I can see why the larger retailers are now refusing chqs & only accepting cards as they are safer & hold less info if they fall into the wrong hands0 -
The card is also often a cheque gaurantee card. We have had cheques bounced on us because the card presented was not for the account the cheque was drawn on. How are we supposed to know that !!
when you receive the card the paperwork tells you which account its for - if you ask at your branch they can put a 2nd line of narrative under your name on the card 'no 2 account' or 'joint account' but this involves ordering a new card - if you don't want a new card there is nothing stopping you putting some sort of notation at the end of the signature strip to jog your memory
of course if you hadn't used a chq but just used yr card the right account would have been debited
it also used to be the case (but I don't know if this is still correct) that the only reason that the cq would have been examined manually if it was flagged due to lack of funds otherwise it would have gone straight thru the clearing system - then they would look at the cq to see if it could be sent back under a technicality rather than 'no funds' to give the cust chance to get funds in to clear before cq represented after amendment. - but I don't know if this holds true in every bank/ b society0 -

They shouldn't have bounced it for that reason, It only has been the correct bank, name & branch (usually denoted by sort code). The account number isn't relevant to the guarantee.
I agree that the lack of account details is a pain. Basically the current Natwest system is just the RBS one re-branded, as they took off the issue number too, just like RBS.
I suppose it might have a superficial security benefit. But it causes more problems that its worth as I personally use my cards for account details when setting up direct debits & incoming transfers etc. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
