Managing balance transfers when living abroad temporarily

Hi all!
I wonder if anyone might be able to help with my situation....
UK citizen currently living in Canada temporarily until next June. I own a house in the UK which is being rented out, UK Bank accounts etc, UK credit card, mortgage etc etc. So I'm earning money in the UK and also earning money out in Canada - all of which I can provide evidence for.
My credit card is now out of it's 0% balance transfer period and I'm getting hammered on interest. Does anyone know if there's any UK credit card companies who I'd be able to approach about a balance transfer card? I know I might just have to suck it up and pay it until I'm back but I'd reeeeeally like to move it now if I can.
Any suggestions welcome!
Thank you :)

You'll need to be a UK resident.

Presumably you are continuing to use a UK address for your bank account, credit cards, mortgage etc and remain on the electoral roll at that address?
If that is so, you might get away with it but I would caution against it. If you do apply, you will need to be economical with the truth and avoid revealing that you are temporarily working in Canada. This may be difficult in terms of income and employer details. I think you will just have to accept paying interest on the balance until you are back in the UK and employed here again (or perhaps repaying the balance if you have a well paying job in Canada).
Do you not have any other credit cards which could offer an existing customer balance transfer? That could be processed without a new application and would present no problem.
  • Thanks zx81 - I thought at much! I should have been more organised and moved it before I left. Thought I'd give it a shot anyway........thank you!
  • Hi Ben, yes that's correct. Plus I'm still paying tax on my income. I think I'm probably best waiting as you suggest, I don't want to have to elaborate the truth on anything as that could totally come back to bite me. Never mind, I figured this would be the case but thought it worth asking anyway. Cheers!
