Car hire insurance

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm a bit confused by car hire insurance.
Included was CWD and extended protection. Then I was going to buy Excess insurance separately. Do I need anything else?
If I have an accident am I completely covered with that? Does the hire company have their own insurance to cover the cost of the damage?
Any help in understanding this would be greatly appreciated!

Alamo in the USA? - Yes, thank you!
So does the car hire company have their own insurance to cover damage so you only need to pay the excess? (I presume that's what the Excess insurance is for?)Is that how it works?0 -

When you book USA car hire from a UK website, insurance is included. Though it usually excludes tyres, keys etc
You can purchase independent excess insurance to cover those things if you wish.0
