Withheld Number calling about a private matter

Options
I got a call from a withheld number asking to talk to me about a private matter, they just said there name and refused to say whom the were calling on behalf off until I confirmed my details, name,DOB, Address etc but I refused as they wouldn't tell me their full details or return number.

I few days later I get a letter addressed private and confidential with a return address of PO Box 189. Not sure to open it or return it.

Any ideas where this could be from?

TIA

Open it and find out. I don't think our psychic abilities stretch to ascertaining who your post is from.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • If the letter is addressed to you why one earth would you return it? Your post gives the impression you're worried; do you have reason to be? There's lots of help and information available from members, but you're really not given any information to go on and I'm not sure anyone here will be able to tell you who that PO Box Number belongs to. Do you want to share some background?
  • Ok, my curiosity got the better of me! Google "PO Box 189". It could be a brochure from The Savoy in London (PO Box 189 London). Alternately it could be debt related (PO Box 189 Huddersfield).

Just open the letter. You won't find out what it's about until you do and it won't change anything if you open it. And if it is about a debt then ignoring it won't make it go away.

Quite right not to give them any personal details over the phone either. Probably just a sales call but you can never be too sure. It's down to them to identify themselves, not you.

Don't think it was sales, they said calling about a private matter. Just odd they didn't want to identity themselves and they went through the trouble of withholding their number

How guarded are you about giving out your phone number?

If you usually take care, the call should only be from companies you deal with and who may need to contact you.

No bank or utility company etc would do this if they needed to talk about your account with them.

Even the heir hunters tell you who they are because they want you to sign up with them not their rivals.

Open the letter - they won't know whether you opened it or not - you didn't sign for it etc.

Respond with a "provit letter", available from the stickies, on the debt free wannabe forum.

This asks them to prove you are liable for the debt, whilst not admitting liability for anything.

Even though it may not be your debt, you should not ignore it.

Fred Smith has a debt with his bank and has moved away. The bank sells the debt on to Crapquest who then try to find Fred Smith. They do a data matching exercise using all the directory and CRA information they have available to them and send letters / make phone calls to all the Fred Smiths that could possibly be the Fred Smith they are looking for hoping to find the right one. Either ignore or send a prove it letter (unsigned to avoid any possibility of your signature miraculously appearing on some document at a later date).
