Non refundable deposit

  • Foxtrotoscar - it wasn't relevant. If I had goats before wasn't the most relevant point. I was talking about deposits. So yes, I've had goats before and I did mention in a reply that at that time, I wasn't experienced and had my nanny have a kid with me, alone! Because my partner - who was experienced - wasn't home - so had to deal with it. People do learn with experience.
  • Thank you Annie and Fosterdog! At least this is relevant and understanding! I found that they also put themselves as a private listing on preloved but are a business...which I am pretty sure they have to disclose?
  • Boris - because my husband is new to goat keeping and my experience was many years ago - so I summarised to them, we were new. It seemed the more relevant piece and a better place to start with them since to imply I am a goat expert would be kind of over-doing it a bit.

And also - you think that farmers are the experts? Maybe - but that doesn't mean the animals have a great life there. Many people are doing the self-sufficiency life these days and are keeping backyard animals - and the animals get a great life. Many people have goats in their back garden, chickens and whilst many say - goats aren't pets and you have to have experience and knowledge...why hasn't that done so well with dogs? I've seen thousands of staffies online - being sold on - because people couldn't handle them! collies too! So tell me - for those with such great pet advice - if goats are different from other pets and require something 'special' then why with dogs - which any numpty can get - are they considered ok? But someone who will care for a goat for their whole life, and learn as they go, are the ones you'd target?

Farmers keep chickens in cages - they are experienced?! My chickens get free range - real free range. not the required little postage stamp legal minimum. I wouldn't put too much store to farmers, and I also wouldn't put too much store to goats are different...all pets are different and either people care for them or not.
  • Ok it wasn't a goat but when we went to see the breeder about a pup, we weren't 100% sure & walked without paying a deposit - we told the breeder we'd ring the next day but by the time we got home we'd had a similar conversation to yours & decided it was the right thing to do. Oh & it was a beagle pup that we were looking at & just have a look how many if them need rehoming!

I'm sensing buyer's remorse here - anything perhaps to do with the condition of the mother's mouth?

Yes, it was buyer's remorse but it was also coercive as we weren't told before we traveled two hours to get there about the mouth either, and said 'its no problem really' - but either way, I said I wasn't sure about having large goats. I said that from the start, and we were told they were friendly and dog friendly. They weren't - when I questioned this - they said, it will be fine. I wasn't ok with it being fine someday - our set up isn't right for antsy goats. I've seen plenty of very friendly goats, these weren't it. so yes, I didn't want to buy them anymore.

But nobody forced you to either agree to buy the goats (and regardless of your husband's lack of experience, you by your own admission you had owned goats beforehand) or pay a deposit.

Can I just ask how much we are talking about?

Seems to me they misrepresented the goats on many fronts. Some things we can forgive, other time people are being less than honest in the hope it helps the sale. Your mistake was not giving any money and just sleeping on it and if the goats were sold in the mean time then so be it.

Maybe a nice letter explaining the situation. With a warning the next stop is the CC. And then see it through if no reply or rejection. It really is easy to do. Or if we are talking about little money. Then move on and just put it in the experience box.

I of course assume there is nothing written that deposits are not refundable?

OP you agreed to buy the goats a contract was formed and delivery arranged. So chalk it up to experience and do a lot more research before you jump in the car and travel two hours.

As has been said you didn't have to buy them.
