    21/26 AFDs today
  • Maman - I'm normally the one who sits there with a coffee, watching everyone else with a scone or muffin - but as its my Birthday I will have one slice of cake while out and about. This means I don't need to buy a whole cake for the house and have it shouting at me to eat it!!!!

    Method in my madness :rotfl:

Sorry for the essay, a lot of thinking out loud without being very awake so a very waffly post from me!

Wanna Bee Free I think you are actually doing well to have persisted with it and there hasn't been a single month in two years where you haven't had days where you have abstained. My thought is that when you set a target of 10 you seem to reach that target, so why not aim for that every month from now on? Or even five? I've always felt it's better to set a lower target and hit it than a more ambitious target that you won't make because I find the second option demotivating - it makes me want to give up altogether. Also, re scrambling at the end of the month, could you try getting it out of the way at the start of the month and having the end of the month free? Anyway, the other thing is that you have done more days this year than last year already and that's totally a move in the right direction so well done you. That's my two bobs' worth, tell me to shut up if it's not helpful :rotfl:

That was very helpful, thank you!

I think what we are both now saying is that I should copy the lovely, wise and moderate Maman with her 10 each month! I used to want the second badge so used to set a target of 14. The 18s came from my spurt of panic when I realised what I had to do to get my banana :D Follwed by the massive drop as I realised the target was impossible. I think your getting it done at the start of month would be
a good idea. Will think on it further.

It's almost without irony that I thought, 'Hmm, that's sobering' about your figures WBF!!! I know you want to be doing better than you are but in all fairness to you you're fully aware of your drinking and that's a heck of a lot more organised and honest with yourself than I was when I drank. Having said that, I honestly wouldn't want anyone to get themselves in to the pickle I did, so if you can put the brakes on now a bit that would be huge progress. It's a mindset, I'm sure of it, that changes, 'Well, one wouldn't hurt, would it?' to, 'Nope, today's an AF day.' If only I'd been able to do that .... Good luck with the rest of November and December. I truly hope you make your target and get your banana. (Sorry, I can't rephrase that to sound okay no matter how much I try!)
So sorry to hear about your cat, I sympathise deeply. Wishing you both lots of good days. x

If we could bottle that change of mindset magic we'd make a fortune. I think I had a glimpse of it a few months ago and I do want to feel more like that in future and less jaded and hungover.

I don't remember where you started from WBF (for me it was absolutely no AF days at all:o) but I think you have to be kinder to yourself. You're right to go back and review as you can learn from the data but don't use it as a stick to beat yourself with. When the scores are lowest was that through stress/sod it or because of holidays? For me taking a conscious decision to enjoy a drink on holiday is very different from self medicating.

For me, having a target of 10 and then feeling good when I exceed it is what suits me best but it's horses for courses. Good Luck!:)

October and earlier in the year were very much self-medicating. This month and the last 3 days of last month were very happy planned holiday drinking, as is this week until Monday27th as I'm extending my November birthday celebrations over about 10 days this year.

I won't beat myself up with figures, just seeking understanding. I started from a daily bottle plus of white wine drinking habit with no alcohol free days for several years apart from flu and a brief hospital stay. Funny how I didn't think of this as any kind of bad thing or even think about it much at all until the creeping upwards part reached more of a problem.
