Paypal advice sought please

As above

i am the seller of an item sale value £120 the item is advertised on gumtree, i like to local sales only.

buy made contact via message and is in gloucestershire asking will i send item to them after numerous messages back and forth the end result is that the buyer is

a. happy to send payment vial paypal
b. happy to alow me to withdraw the cash prior to sending the item
c. happy to keep the item if its not to their liking.

Now having not used paypal in a very long time i have an account set up and linked to a bank account that has £10 in it.
the buyer has asked me to send a paypal invoice to them in order to make payment, is this a method private sellers can use as i am not a business?

last but not least it all sounds to good to be true, can anyone see a scam here that i am not aware of ?

many thanks

As far as I'm aware the buyer can claim

    Item not recieved
Fraudulent payment (you taking the money out does not protect)
Item not as described , broken etc and get a refund

Browntoa is totally correct. The worst that can happen is that he keeps the item AND the refund.

If he wants it that much, suggest a bank transfer. Would imagine that's the last you will hear from him..

PayPal covers your buyer exactly as it would on eBay, so you need to use tracked and insured delivery and keep proof of posting for 6 months minimum.

It makes no difference whether you remove the money from your account or not.

    cheers for the reply

item not recieved i would be sending royal mail special postage next day tracked

fraudulent payment, would the invoice not be proof that it was legit sale?

item not as described surely my text messages we have sent back and forth would cover that?

the bank acc i would be using is a spare account with £10 in it very rarely used account.

would you sell or not in this scenario?

Ask for the payment to be sent by PayPal Gift. The risk then is all with the buyer.

This can't be reversed and the buyer won't have any comeback.

Item not as described - your messages make no difference if buyer opens a case in PayPal and claims damage or something missing/different than that advertised.

Fraudulent payment- buyer just has to call bank and say payment was unauthorised .

You need to read the sticky postage thread to familiarise yourself with seller protection requirements.

A claim for unauthorised use of card can still be made.

  • well he is willing to use bank transfer.
So does this make things more legit? is there still a possible scam or buyer loophole?

    Wrong, offers even less protection.

Buyer claims fraudulent transaction, they get their money back and the OP loses everything because they have not sold anything. They accepted a gift payment. They didnt sell anything.

They received a gift which got refunded.

Bank transfer you get the cash and hopefully they cannot pull it back.

Beware deals where they send you more than your asking and they say dont worry we trust you, refund it after taking your expenses.

Wifes friend nearly got stung with that. Received a CHQ for £3000 for an item worth a few hundred. Buyer said no problem just refund...

You send the item and the refund which will be via a method where you cannot claim it back. Then in a few months the money gets clawed back from your bank account. CHQ will be from a foreign bank which is excluded from any protection.

BT is fine. You need to ensure he has paid in cash or transferred his balance, rather than him paying in a cheque - some banks don't show a cheque payment as any different to a cash deposit.

Let him make the BT and then call your bank to ensure it is in and is cash deposit/transfer. If you can, leave it until the next working day before sending the item.

If he is willing to pay bank transfer then accept.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
