Problems with Fire Stick

I've switched it to the other HDMI port and now it's working, no idea what the problem was.

I might get the dongle anyway, and keep an eye on ebay for the better router anyway.

As I posted you need to reboot the the Fire Stick as well, go into device settings and perform a restart. It would be really useful if you can find the HDMI extender cable as this should help you a lot or if it came with just an HDMI adaptor then you could connect via a standard HDMI cable and move it away from your TV altogether.

Maybe less interference where the other hdmi port is?

I think so, the other port has the stick flush with the tv, away from the router, the new one has it sticking out from the back.
