    Hi
They will be being taken out of circulation on an ongoing basis as we speak.
I suspect come Oct 15th there will be few around. I'm seeing less & less in my change.
It will be only what people have in their piggy banks etc by then.

There is no legal obligation on shops to give change
    Indeed.

If you offer a £50 note for a carton of milk, the shop can refuse to serve you ; and if you offer it for an £8 haircut you've had, the barber doesn't have to give change. Back in the real world, however . . .

No shop has to accept them at the moment. No shop is required to stop accepting them. Neither are you.
Quite. "Legal tender" actually has nothing to do with shop purchases. It's merely about settling debts.
You can accept or reject whatever types of payment you want. Pound coins, £5 notes, sea shells, whatever. Of course, if you want to retain customers you'll probably want to accept widely used forms of payment such as British coins...

That'll be why I paid the barber using 8 old pound coins yesterday :D
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
