Does BT get fiber early?

Hi all,

I've just finished my contract with BT and I really want to switch providers as their speed and level of service is a complete joke.

The cabinet we are connected is not currently connected to fiber but (apparently) it will be in the next couple of months.

I'm looking at signing up with Vodafone but I don't want to be waiting another 6 months for fiber (we've already been waiting over a year!)

My question is: Do BT customers get access to fiber ahead of other providers and if so how long does it take for others to be able to offer service? They've only provisioned for 500 houses on an estate of over 1200 so getting early will be pretty important.

Thanks!

    mine just went live , was no more than a days "lag" for the others to show live and ready for orders.

    I was the first install ;) but only because I decided to check how the install had progressed and must have clicked on the checker the day it went live

    All ISP's get access at the same time.

    However, there is one caveat;

    In the parent exchange, ISP's (or their backhaul provider) need to have a cable link from the Openreach kit to connect to their own equipment for the data to pass over. BT wholesale are usually on the ball and have them in place before an area goes live, whereas Sky and TalkTalk etc can drag their heels a little. Most of the time though, especially now as relatively few exchanges are "new" to fibre, it's available all at once.

    I doubt there's provisions for 500 on a single cabinet. The largest fibre cab can house 288 connections (384 with an upgrade). So unless there's 2 PCP cabinets each with a fibre twin, the. 288 will be the max, for now.

    Thanks!

    I didn't realise they had such little space in those cabs! I think there are two of them, hence the 500 number.

    I think I'm going to go ahead and make the switch. Anything to stop paying BT more money than I have to!

    Would be very, very, very unsual for 2 fibre cabinets to be installed initally to one cooper cabinet.

    Although I suspect on an estate with 1200 homes there will likely be 2 separate copper PCP's.

    You'll only be connected to one of them.
