Marlon Brando's On The Waterfront to be beamed on Liverpool waterfront

MARLON BRANDO’S classic film On The Waterfront will be beamed on to a giant screen overlooking the River Mersey.

The multi-Oscar winning movie is coming to Liverpool in a free open air spectacular finale to the city’s “On the Waterfront” weekends.

The Film on the Waterfront weekend on September 25-27 follows similar music and art events over the summer which attracted thousands of people to the city’s World Heritage waterfront.

On The Waterfront’s powerful story, concerned with the problems of trade unionism, corruption and racketeering, features Brando at the peak of his career.

The new Museum of Liverpool on Mann Island will be transformed into a gigantic 24-metre (70ft) wide cinema screen for the free showing on Saturday, September 26, which is being organised by Liverpool city council.

More than 2,500 people are expected at the Pier Head to watch the film, which was shown outdoors in San Francisco last year.
And the 1954 epic is just one of a number of classic films and audio visual performances to be screened at the Pier Head over three days.

On Friday, September 25 the film will be Liverpool-born director Terence Davies’s The Long Day Closes, the story of 11-year-old Bud, a sad and lonely boy growing up in the wreckage of post-war Liverpool as he struggles through his days with cinema as his main source of solace.

The Saturday night entertainment starts at 7.30pm with an evening dedicated to classic shorts and feature films, with Brando’s On The Waterfront starting at 8pm.

And the Big M – a mobile art space – will show short videos from noon to 5pm throughout the weekend, while visitors to the waterfront will also be treated to other entertainment and street theatre.
Cllr Gary Millar, Liverpool’s executive member for enterprise and tourism, said: “This spectacular weekend at Liverpool’s world-famous waterfront will provide people of all ages with a great opportunity to see a superb selection of free films.

“There’s been a lot of interest in the weekend so we would urge everyone to arrive early, bring your popcorn and sit back and watch what will undoubtedly be one of Europe’s best cinematic experiences.”
