Hairdresser ruined my hair- what are my rights?

Hi Guys,

Last Friday I went to my usual hairdressers to get my hair coloured and cut. Unfortunately I have ended up with completely ruined hair. After a lengthy consultation over Facebook Messenger and photos being sent of what I wanted, it was confirmed that the look was achievable. For those out there who know about hair, I had asked for a peach balayage, and ended up with a rose gold ombre. The process for creating these looks are completely different, and it is reflected in the price. Ombres will be cheaper as they take less time. My hairdresser charged me for a balayage.

Not only that but the pink colour put on my hair has completely faded after one wash. I was prepared for some dulling as I know that pink colours can be short lived, yet it should last for more than a wash. Parts of my hair have had no pink dye on it at all, therefore there are just yellow strands that haven't had toner on them.

Finally, my hairdresser cut a lot of length off my hair, something I said I specifically did not want. I have been trying to grow my hair for a long time and having length cut off is something I am completely not comfortable with. As I was sat in the chair I started to tear up when she said she wished to take a minimum of 2 inches off.

I would like to know what my rights are. I have been left with ruined hair that is dry and breaking. It is not what I specified that I wanted. I paid £92 for the visit, which is nothing compared to the fact my hair is most likely beyond repair.

I am sorry to sound so pathetic complaining about a bad colour and hair cut, but for someone who's hair means so much to them this has been a deeply upsetting experience.

Any advice on how I should go about complaining would be much appreciated.

When she said she wanted to take two inches off why did you not say no?

Have you complained to the hairdresser to give them a chance to remedy your problem? That should be your first step.

Get a deep conditioning treatment for your hair. I doubt very much that it is ruined, it just needs additional care after a colour.

Have you got any pictures of the after? And any photos of the picture you showed them that you wanted?

Rose gold and peach are VERY similar hair colours, and given that there will always be a bit of give in hair colour and how it takes, I don't think you have much of an argument here.

As for the ombre vs balayage - what do they charge for an ombre? I suppose you may have some argument if they have a price difference and they've done the other one, but the end results again often look very similar.

Also pink dye doesn't last. In fact, it's usually just a toner. I've had "permanent" pink box dye on my hair that has literally only lasted one wash, but my hair does fade very quickly. I wouldn't complain to the hairdresser about this though, it's just one of those things.

My first suggestion would be to go back to the hairdresser and ask what they are willing to do to fix it.

Who knew you could get ombre and balayage at the hairdressers? I didnt.

and if you get one instead of the other, compo is the answer.

seriously why didnt you say I dont want any cut off, that would have stopped that,
have you been back to ask what they can do now

I've never had a hair consultation any other way than face to face.
Part of the consultation would be to ensure that they were able to carry out your wishes.
Why did you do this by Facebook?
What colour was your hair before the treatments?

You aren't suggesting a face to face encounter are you? How old fashioned ;)

How about posting a photo of what you wanted vs what you got.

Your first step is to go back to the hairdresser and see if they can correct the colour.

You had the opportunity to say no to having 2 inches cut off your hair, so no action necessary here.

Also the colours are very similar, so I sm not sure you have any redress here either, other than having the pink redone.

If they have done an ombre rather than a balayage, then you are entitled to the difference in cost.

Isn't 'balayage' something to do with a broomstick in French? So witches hair???

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
