Swapping internet providers - can I forward my e-mails?

I am thinking of moving providers and have been told that it is possible to import e-mails and contacts to new accounts. Is this correct?
Can this be done to import BT Yahoo e-mails to sky e-mails? (BT are so bad I am thinking of swapping to Sky and getting a TV package alongside broadband and phone).

Depends. Some providers have a habit of terminating your email inbox when you leave them. If that's the case there will be nothing to forward as the old email wouldn't work.
I say "depends" because it hinges on how you're accessing the mail at the moment. If you're doing it through a program such as Outlook, Thunderbird or something like that, then changing provider doesn't change how they work save for your changing server settings.
If however you log into a website to get your emails. the issue is complicated somewhat. There isn't always an export option for the mail.0 -
I log in via BT mail (think it's part of the Yahoo website). I was hoping that I could export my e-mails and contacts prior to changing providers - perhaps to a gmail account.
Not sure if there is an option to import e-mails into Gmail?0 -
This is why its good idea not to use a providers email based account but use yahoo, gmail etc. You might have to consider you will lose access to it.
You could maybe ask on the sky forums.0
