I've a Dell Inspiron (originally Vista-32); would any kind tech be able to tell me whether this laptop has upgrade rights to W7 please and, if so, would they be able to provide a suitable image? Tag 7PSS7H1

    Ah the old style Inspirons. I've still got the one I bought from way back, it's like the old IBM Thinkpads: a Sherman tank!

    You don't need an image. Just buy a Windows 7 licence for it and download the Cd image from Microsoft. Burn the image to disk and boot from it.

    Yes, you just need to install the latest BIOS. Is it already installed; A14? If not, do you know how?

    Do you want 32 bit or 64 bit?

    No need to purchase another licence in this case.

    Cheers. Had A02. Tried A14 said error, tried again as admin said error; rebooted; sulked; rebooted as A14. Don't ask me what happened.
    Guess Windows 64 will be best. Thanks.

    Generally better to flash BIOS via DOS. Happily it went ok anyway.

    The one I just inherited was in a sorry state; supposedly built like a tank this is a scrap of shiny plastic. Enough complaining;
    1. A,S,D and left-mouse-control don't work so an external keyboard is needed
    2. the power light is flashing red annoyingly - battery is knackered. This laptop will finish its life sitting on a desk with permanent power supply.
    3. CD/DVD drive is bust; swapped for another - the different bezel adds a bit of "difference" (yes, I know they can be swapped).
    Windows 7 Pro went on fine with its 200patches (I'm not complaining it didn't cost anything). We'll see how long it lasts.

    I've had one on my desk in work for about 3-ish years, it was given to me after having a can of pop spilled on it and left in an airing cupboard for 3 months or so.....supposedly didn't want to work again.. took about half an hour and it hasn't missed a beat since, despite having w10 inflicted on it*

    *however, that was a clean install on a fresh hdd, the w7 one has been removed for safe-keeping to slot back in when w10 borks it :D

    No need for external keyboard,...
    All good stuff if you're prepared to put in the effort. I don't mind opening desktops but laptops make me nervous. Last week I had an HP Pavilion m6 with dead fan; cheap as chips replacement on Ebay but a sod to get at; its the ribbon cables that I hate the most. Fan replaced and put back together - guess what didn't work - the touchpad. (Fortunately the owner uses exertnal keyboard+mouse). I know the cable can be replaced for peanuts but I'm not opening that laptop up again.
