Moving house with Sky

My husband and I are buying our first and are completing on 31 July. I have just gotten off the phone to Sky and it will apparently take THREE WEEKS from this date until they can get our new internet service up and running. The reason for this apparently is that there is an "active line" at the property (obviously; the current owners are still living there!) and they need to do what's called an "active line takeover". This really isn't acceptable in my view - I'm self-employed and work from home and simply can't be without internet for three days, let alone three weeks. And surely a simple switch should take a matter of hours not weeks? Has anyone else experience this, and is there a way round it? I am tempted to cancel and take out a new service but we are still in contract with Sky until October.
