Sixt car hire - basic insurance not included

Just discovered (after being prompted by a recent article in Guardian Money) that my Sixt car rental in France in a couple of weeks' time does not include the basic CDW-type insurance. So if I don't take out any insurance beforehand, or take out the policy they'll try to sell me when I pick up the car, I'll be liable for the whole value of the car if it's stolen or damaged. Does anyone know if it's possible to buy an insurance for a hire car in advance - not just for the excess but for the whole value of the car?

It sounds like Sixt are hiring their cars out with only the most basic third party cover required by law, and making everything else an extra. So as I understand it you need to get CDW and LDW.
