Easyjet won't refund for their Cancellation

New guy here, I heard that the esteemed posters here the know-how to get stuff done, so here goes:-

My friend was due to go to Disneyland with his family this morning, only to be told hours beforehand that his flight had been cancelled due a build up of delays pushing them out of their flight.

My friend then called the customer service line and was told that they would not receive any refund because they attempted to get the refund before the cancellation.

My question is this, what course of action should my friend take? This is obviously garbage, as why would my friend try to refund his flight before knowing it was cancelled? He's trying to take his family to Disneyland for gods' sake!
