I remember on an my wifes old car having to switch the reds and yellows around i think this was to do with memory if, well, memory serves?

I covered this in my post #8. Where are you stuck? Forget everything else for the moment, and just connect the 2 ISO connectors into the connector block, and that into the back of the stereo. Check the red to red, and yellow to yellow. Switch the key round to 'ACC' - the first bit. Does the stereo come on? Stick a CD in or something to test for sound.

    Terminology for start.
And electrics in general for another. I've never been able to get to grips with electrics. If i get a step by step then anyone can follow it but it's when people say things like permanent live here or whatever & i just look blank like ........ what on earth is permanent live?? Understand me? :(

Anyway i did what i think you just said right before i made this post. It's the reason i made it.

I took the lead that came with the stereo & plugged it in to the rear. At the opposite end were 2 blocks. I plugged the connecting blocks from the car into this & then hit the power button with the ignition on .... it didn't turn on.

There are two 12v live feeds to the stereo, one is direct from the battery (permanent live), the other is ignition controlled live.

The permanent live keeps the various settings when the set is switched off, the ignition live switches the set on and off.

It can vary between the car manufacturers which terminal in the power ISO connector is the permanent live and which is the ignition live.

The Red and Yellow cables in the stereo lead link those terminals in the ISO connector to the relevant terminals in the stereo connector, and the bullet connectors need to be connected to allow them to be the correct way round for the stereo - either Red to Red or Red to Yellow.

Good. Now, what Rover driver says ^. One live is yellow, one is red. You'll see them both on one of the two big blocks of cables. You might need to swap them, there might be a fuse, and they might not even be connected at all.
Connect them up one way or another, and if you find that the stereo stays on when you take the key out, you need to swap them (yellow to red or vice versa).
