5 lost years of progress, will components now wear out instead of becoming obsolete?

More than 5 years ago I upgraded my computer
This is unheard of because usually it was every other year.

The CPU I bought was this:
Intel Core i5 2500K Unlocked, S1155 1 £135.99

I've just had a look around and you can not get a better CPU for the same money

Replacing components because they have worn out just seems wrong in a computer. I've always spent money for upgrades, I don't want to spend money on standing still :rotfl:

Please someone, come up with a new invention that will save us from this stagnation!

ps what a rip off Intel are, charging so much money for old rope.
I remember when AMD weren't crap ;)

Don't worry, I bet soon there will be some bleeding edge technology will come along to the suck money out of your pockets.

My bet is 3d memory that intel and toshiba are currently doing. It is apparently x1000 faster, x10 denser, higher iops, and x1000 times the endurance compare to current nand transistor technology. Google 3dXpoint

So for a few years you can expect a few different standards, connectors and incompatibility, just like the old days :)

I have had the same motherboard, CPU, DVDRW, second-hand 24" HD moonitor and speakers for over 5 years. I changed the graphics card 2 years ago and bought a new USB 3.0 hub, mouse and keyboard at the same time. New 1TB hard drive 18 months ago. My printer is 7 years old. My NAS and its 2TB storage is almost 4 years old.

It all works very well and does exactly what I want. I strip and clean out the case and componenets twice a year and I keep an eye on temperatures. Why should I change it? If it falls over, the desktop route will be over for me: I will buy a 17" laptop and sell the bits I can sell.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

    If its not broke .....
  • I'm struggling to persuade my work to replace my laptop. It's a 4 year old HP with pretty neet specs (i7 3Ghz, 16GB RAM and a 500Gb SSD)

BUT.. the damn thing crashes a lot due to a wonky graphics card (I think!)

To be fair, it's not bad still and really, it probably just needs a good clean out and a fresh SSD putting in it.

I remember when 4 years was an eternity in PC development. what's happened? The OS's seem less intuitive (bring back windows 7) and there's no apparently improvements anymore.

I just bought an ex-corporate Dell 390 for use as a home web server. Probably 5 years old. It cost £63 and came with a TB hard drive. I swapped the mechanical drive for an SSD and plan on probably using it until it busts.

It was some years ago that hardware finally defeated the programmers best efforts of creating so much bloat that faster hardware was needed. This would even make an acceptable Windows machine - it's less than half the power of my Windows desktop but probably more than double that of the pretend Win 10 laptop I'm using now which is essentially an over blown tablet with a keyboard.

Until somebody comes up with something revolutionary for chewing memory, cpu, and storage there is little point in upgrading most hardware bought in the last few years.

You've lost a lot more than progress. The A8 7650K is a better chip and comes with better integrated graphics.

Unless you're a die hard Blue team player. Switch to team Red else get yourself a better Green team or Red team graphics card.

Aren't AMD still crap when it comes to Single threaded performance?
Most software still seems to be single threaded and so that's the main factor for me, although 4 cores is a minimum, most of the time you are thrashing one core and the others are doing litt.e

My boiler has broken again, PCB is pants have replaced it twice already, no more, I have plugged in an old HTC one in its place and I still have no Hot water/Heating but hey but at least I can send it a command to say switch on now, doesn't work but at least I can watch hot movies instead and then have a cold shower .
The components on the board cost about £10 but the board costs £189 plus Gassafe fitter costs. Oh and the fan went too last year £160 +fitting . Moral of this tale overclock your PC and use it for Heating and take cold showers
