Airline denying claim due to knock on effect.

Options
I recently flew an EU airline on a flight from LHR to TLL via HEL. My LHR-HEL flight was delayed, this resulted in me missing my HEL-TLL flight. I ended up arriving in TLL four hours late and put in a claim for EU261 compensation.

The airline denied my claim based on 'Air traffic control - extraordinary circumstances'. When I used an online app to check this the ATC delay actually occurred the day before - in Hong Kong!
This resulted in a knock on delay for a series of flights including mine.

As I understand EU261 unless the ATC delay was incurred on MY flight or perhaps the inbound flight from HEL maybe they are in their right to claim extraordinary circumstances. But an ATC delay from the day before?
