Hi,

A relative of mine wants to sell his private number plate.

What is the correct legal procedure of selling a private number plate? What paperwork/fees involved etc?

Finally which is the best place to sell a private number plate with the best profitable returns?

Thanks,

    If the buyer wants to use the registration, then they will need to paperwork that authorises it's use on their vehicle ( certificate of entitlement) this is what will be transferred for a fee and I think it still has to be logged with the DVLAm , BTW every registration is private, it's only of worth the the prospective buyer.

    Don't bother with the companies that reckon your number is worth £10,000. They won't buy it off you, they simply advertise it and sting you for a comission if it actually sells.

    Tbh, unless the plate forms a very rude word, or really does spell out a common name perfectly it isn't worth anything, as you can get your initials on a plate for £250 from the DVLA direct, including the transfer fees.

    Cheers for the responses.

    Yeah the plate spells out a common name however what you mean by perfectly? Do you mean perfectly by spelling out a name with just letters with no numbers involved?

    Perfectly means all the characters are there and it's really clear. R123 BRT for Robert isn't perfect. B0 BBY is close enough.

    I'd stick it on eBay with the buyer paying the transfer fee.

    Ok how much are transfer fees normally?

    Yeah I say the number plate is perfectly as the name is spelt out in letters close together with just 1 number in the name.

    Any other better sell places than ebay that I will get the most return or is ebay the best place to sell a private number plate?

    Do i see this a this as a return on a investment or do private number plates depreciate in value?

    Only to someone with the same thinking pattern as you....
    eg a plate B3ERY maybe desirable to you where as DUT12 maybe more desirable to me, more realistically F10NA ? maybe desirable to someone called Fiona but not to Kay, then you would need lots of Fiona's or Kay's after that plate to be willing to pay a price if they wanted a cherished registration in the 1st place. Again COL1N is of 'use' to someone called Colin but not to Roy. AUD1 maybe of some desire to someone with an Audi but not say N155ANS is to someone with a Nissan.

    You had me curious then did anyone purchase a N155AN plate?

    The answer is YES!!! C, E and F probably original plates. But B and P were purchased or swapped vehicles at some point.

    N155ANB = A 7 year old Qashqai

    C= (1995 Land Rover Discovery)
    E= (1996 VW Polo)
    F= (1006 VW Polo""
    P= (2011 Nissan Navara)

    Hi another question is that the relative wants to sell the car as well and like to know is it the matter of just putting the previous number plates back on the car before selling it or is there paperwork/fees involved associated with the private plates before selling the car?

    He means that N155ANC, ANE, ANF are on the vehicles they were originally assigned to in 1995/6, when N was the current prefix.

    But N155ANB, ANP have been transferred onto newer cars.
