Tales from The Shire

I managed to get my chores done yesterday and squeezed in the baking of a Lemon Curd and Blackcurrant Cake. The currant bushes are still producing
There's still a little lettuce left in the veg patch too so we had some in a Tuna and Cheese Salad for lunch yesterday. And... I managed to harvest enough irregular sized, slug nibbled courgettes to make Jamie's Courgette Carbonara for supper :T There may even be more courgettes to come. Not as good a harvest as last year's but at least we're getting something now.
Today a friend visited bringing delicious gifts and good company :j It's been nice to spend some time in interesting conversation instead of wielding a dusterWe had Halloumi Traybake with pitta bread and hummus for lunch. I didn't have any Romanesco anything so I put some extra peppers in instead - sush, don't tell, she'll never know :rotfl:
For pudding we had some of the cake.
The garage called to confirm that the problem with the car is indeed a detached brake shield and they can fix it and replace the brake discs and pads by tomorrow.
The mower company called to say they can deliver tomorrow morning. Mr F is very excited.
I am very excited because the new vacuum arrived yesterday and I love it. Even on the lowest setting it's more powerful than my old one. The battery lasts three or four times as long, it has a larger capacity and it's easier and cleaner to empty. My life is going to be better as a result of having this cleaner :rotfl:
Mr F and I have just had a cheese salad sandwich for supper. He's off to the gym and I'm still full of all the delicious goodies friend brought.
I'm feeling very tired now. I've been going to bed at a reasonable hour this week but reading for far too long. I think a very early night is on the cards as I have a busy weekend ahead. Our next Annex guests arrive tomorrow and DS1, his wife and their puppy arrive Saturday morning  I'm a little worried about FDawg as he's still unpredictable with other dogs. However, I have a plan for introducing them and getting them used to each other before the sleepover. Wish me luck!

Good luck!
I am extremely honoured to have been your guest and to have partaken in your most excellent halloumi tray bake (which was perfect just as it was :j ) and most delectable cakean absolute treat of a day for me so thank you :kisses3:
Always good to meet up with an online pal (although note to self - and others - do remember to tell someone exactly where you're going!!  I neglected to tell Mr Cheery anything other than the name of the nearest town, which given that we actually met at your house, would have been quite useless in an emergency, particularly as he confessed he couldn't remember what forum we met on, and I also hadn"t told him either your real name or forum name!)
Internet safety folks  :rotfl:
(I was working on the assumption that, if one was going to commit a nefarious crime, one could find easier ways to do it than to invent an entire money-saving backstory complete with facts and figures and post on a forum for several years on the off chance that someone might later walk into a trap but I suppose you just never know)
Anyway, thanks for feeding me nice food and saying sensible and interesting things and not burying me under the patio:rotfl:
Good luck with your guests!0 -
You are very welcome Cheery and I'm glad you enjoyed the day. We haven't buried a visitor under the patio yet but we have been known to work them to death  Many an unwitting visitor has found themselves weed pulling or fruit picking in the past. You have had a narrow escape this time as I have to admit to forgetting about your scything expertise...
I won't make that mistake again. Mwah hah hah :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

The mower arrived this morning and Mr F has been mowing ever since. He was last seen mowing off into the sunset :rotfl:
I've been busy getting the house ready for visitors and welcoming our Annex guests.
I also picked up the car so all in all I'm feeling much poorer now than when the day startedAt least some of the car cost was covered by the warranty.
All the chores are done now so I'm indulging in a glass of red. DS2 and wife will be arriving at about 10 am so we won't have too early a start.
The weather in the Shire today has been glorious and is set to remain so for the Bank Holiday. I am intending to make the most of it.
Enjoy the break everyone

Fortune & Cheery you two ladies do make me laugh:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Thank-you for your good humour:D
May have to attempt that lovely courgette carbonara as there is a glut of them in our house!4 YEARS 10 MONTHS DEBT FREE!!! (24 OCT 2016)(With heartfelt thanks to those who have gone before us & their indubitable generosity.)...and now I have a mortgage! (23 AUG 2021)New projection - 14 YEARS 8 MONTHS LEFT OF 20 YEARS (reduced by 16 mths)Psst...I may have started a diary!0 -
We currently have NO courgettes of our own (although I did notice a teensy couple growing yesterday :j ) However I did notice that Mr Cheery has managed to acquire TWO giant marrows from some friend or another and now they're skulking at the back of the kitchen counter waiting for me to do something with them...
Very pleased your exciting mower has arrived :j :j No need for my scythe with that aroundGood job really as I've now done TWO strips of our hay field with the scythe and while it's going well, I can't see me having enough time to finish it all this side of Christmas :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

It's one of my favourite recipes RT. Really quick and simple to make and delicious. You just need to make sure the pan is off the heat when you add the sauce otherwise you get scrambled eggs :eek:Cheery_Daff wrote: »We currently have NO courgettes of our own (although I did notice a teensy couple growing yesterday :j ) However I did notice that Mr Cheery has managed to acquire TWO giant marrows from some friend or another and now they're skulking at the back of the kitchen counter waiting for me to do something with them...

I have marrows too CheeryI bought a marrow plant instead of a butternut squash plant by mistake. I now have three marrows hardening off in the kitchen and others threatening. I don't usually cook marrows but will be looking for interesting recipes so watch this space.
I've read it's a good thing to cut flower meadows bit by bit. Gives the seeds a better chance when they ripen at different timesNo courgettes here sadly.
Seems like RT is the only one with courgette bragging rights this year Beanie :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
