Not really- it gives you a sense of security :) but I forgot to mention that this happens only at the major sites like karnak, pyramids etc etc.

Not so bad then. I like to go on holiday to relaxed places. We love getting in a car and just exploring on our own. I would hate it if I felt ill at ease or worried about where we might end up, especially with two kids.

Yeah I know what you mean- you should perhaps try the red sea if you have young kids- its dead safe there and there are plenty of cheap package deals now:)

Definately go. We went on trip while in Cyprus, to Egypt. When we got off the boat at Port Said, Police where there, escorted us onto the coaches. Police closed all the main streets thro' Port Said, all the people were happy and smiling not jeering or unhappy. We had a police escort alot of the way to Giza where the Pyramids are and the Sphinx. Absolutely fantastic, never thought I would see anything like that. While at the Pyramids, Police on camels making sure all the nuisence "sellers" and dodgy ones were kept away.

Got to Cairo and the same thing Police to allow you in Museum, again fantastic to see all Tutenkhamun bits and pieces.

A word of warning, Cairo and Egypt in general is very very hot. When we were in the museum, it was 46 degrees and 100% humidity. The only air conditioned bit was where Tuts gold is, a small room packed full of people trying the escape the heat!!

Go and have fun, life is too short to say what if......... there were warnings when we went, no trouble seen or heard of. I went with wife and 2 kids 10 and 11 at the time.

    Have fun.

Although I have no first hand knowledge of the area you intend to visit, I do live very close in Yorkshire to where a grandmother, daughter and grandaughter once lived, and who were on a holiday in Egypt a few years ago when they were all shot at and killed at one of the tourist spots (along with many others).

It was heartbreaking for the family left behind - one of the bodies of the three was even mixed up with another body and ended up in another country.

loobeylou, what a horrible experience. When did that happen ? as i was not aware of 3 generations of Britons ever being killed in Egypt while on holiday.

    Hi
I went not long after 9/11. Security was very high - lots of men with very big jackets on hiding guns. However you kind of get used to it as they are there to protect you. It's a great place - the souk is really good. I agree with the person who said that something could happen to you in London. Unless I am def told by the FO not to go, then I always do. It's one of the best holidays that I have ever had. Hope you have a great time!

I backpacked around Egypt in January - Wonderfull place, and cheap too! The only problems you'll be likely to encounter are the usual Touts.

I'm off to Egypt in a few few weeks now. Going to the Sinai region, will report back on the security situation (however I don't think there will be much of a problem).

Obviously its your choice but I have been to Egypt several times in the past year with the last time being to Taba in December.

It is generally very safe and the people are very worried that we as tourists will be afraid to go there. This is what anyone who threatens with bombs wants.

If you are going to Egypt then I would say not to go to Cairo anyway as other places are far nicer. It is a capital after all and a bit like going to London.

I would nt worry too much if I were you.
