Nhs prescription penalty charge

Hey!
I have a prepayment certificate for regular medicines which I renew annual.
So it seems there was a gap of few weeks when I didn't have a valid card and got a medicine and now I've been caught.
I don't mind paying the 8.60, but the penalty charge is a further £40+.
I've heard of people disputing it, do I have any grounds?

Phone them and be nice. I had a fine when I didn't renew my exemption certificate and wasn't covered for a couple of weeks. You can but try.

Also change to paying by DD and it will automatically renew for you (unless your 60th birthday falls within the next year)

Are you saying you didn't realise your certificate was out of date even though it would have had a start and expiry date stamped on the front and that it was a mistake, because 'caught' in that context seems a strange choice of word.


The rules are clear in that you must have a valid exemption on the day you are asked to pay, you could appeal but I don't know anyone who has been successful

If you had renewed before you got caught this will strengthen you case when appealing against the fine, if on the other hand you only renewed parter you got caught then I'd say you haven't grounds to appeal

Oh dear, the daily mail middle England police are in Force today!

I've got a wallet full of cards, I don't exactly check my expiry date daily.

Ever made a mistake in your life? Apart from being born?

I'll get on to them..I don't mind paying as I'm.quite well off.

If anyone fancies a laugh check out the OPs tragic posts on the relationships board. That is, if you can get over the fact it's a mistake you were born.

It'll also give you a big clue as to what the medication is for.

Ignorance is neither an excuse for breaking the law nor for getting out of a fine incurred through carelessness.


If 'not knowing' was an excuse, everyone would take advantage.

My pharmacy note the expiry date of my ppc every time I use it..

OOHHH and to think I actually went to the trouble of trying to help you by linking the page from the NHSBSA where you can appeal, never mind as you have so much money at least you are not going to be whining about your fine being a 'tax on the poor' like a lot of people who get caught out.
