Car hire in Iceland

Hi everyone,
I have booked a hire car for a short stay in Iceland in August, however the car company are asking to hold an amount of £2,200 from my credit card for the duration of the hire, used in the event of any damage to the vehicle.
Alternatively, there is an option to purchase damage liability insurance from Axa for £50.
I just wondered whether this was a mandatory requirement and whether i might be refused hire should I not do this. Has anyone else has been in this position?
To be honest, i don't want to have to raise the credit card limit for the sake of this.
Thanks for your help

No. There will still be the £2000 held on your CC. The only way to avoid it is to purchase the waiver from the car hire company itself, not a third party broker.
Iceland is unique in having not only CDW and Super CDW, but also Super Duper CDW.
So likely you will have to purchase both Super CDW and Super Duper CDW..
Probably better to raise the CC limit, take the basic CDW and use http://www.moneymaxim.co.uk/compare-car-hire-excess-insurance to obtain a suitable car hire excess policy.0 -

I'm sure they meant; The only way to avoid it is to purchase the waiver from the car hire company itself, not a third party broker.
The fact that the OP mentioned AXA, confirms that it is the broker's insurance being offered for £50.
To get an idea of the wide range of super duper wuper options available in Iceland, look here; http://www.reykjavikcars.com/https-secure-online-payment
So either you purchase all of the waivers directly from the car hire company or you obtain standalone car hire excess insurance, preferably with SLI and allow them to put a deposit hold on your CC.0 -
There are many car rental companies available out there. You may check out by reading reviews and choosing the best one as per your budget.0

What hire company is it? I have been to Iceland 5 times and never had such a charge. Apart from the first time, I have taken excess insurance with Questor Insurance and declined any CDW apart from the minimum - never had a problem with this. I've always used Hertz, so if you are using one of the local companies that may be the difference. If you want to check the Hertz prices out, use Hertz.is as the prices are cheaper than booking through the .co.uk site, and you can often find a discount code with a little help from Google.0
