Childhood 'C' memories include Mum making the Cake, using gravy browning as colouring, plus mince pies and sausage rolls. The same old decorations every year, both in the main living room and front room. A pillowcase on the bottom of my bed. Usually roast turkey, although we had goose one year. Parents and grown up brothers off to the pub at lunchtime, leaving me instructions to put the potatoes in the oven and stir the gravy. Family coming back, quite merry, lovely late lunch. Tea later with the Cake. Evening spent by me playing with my toys and the grownups playing cards and drinking well into the early hours. Sometimes Mum would get really squiffy and start singing rude songs like Three Jews from Jerusalem and The Quartermaster's Store. My brothers' mates used to love coming to our house at that time of year. One life - your life - live it!10

Nargle I remember singing The Quartermaster's Store when I was in the Guides, so that must have been a relatively polite version8

Have those of you who were in the guides read 'How the Girl Guides Won the War'? I have a copy, but haven't read it - I wasn't in the Guides, but my aunt was, so my dad read it... I probably should.7

Ooh thanks greenbee - I'll see if I can eventually get around to seeing if I can buy a copy. There's probably no point looking for it in the library!
ETA Have bought Kindle version! Thanks again!6 -
I wasn't in the Guides but I was flung out of the Brownies for fighting7

well she asked for it!

Ivy, the next book you should be looking for is, 'How a war started in a Brownie Pack. by A Vase."
I was never a Guide either. I did go to camp with the scouts once, but that's another story.
Haven't done anything of interest recently, so I will spare you the boring derails.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
.Don't be afraid to be open minded. Your brain isn't going to fall out.
I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.8 -
Lovely thought for today, Monnagran.
A couple of my brothers were in the Forces, so they could put filthy words to any songs, probably even hymns. One of them got in trouble because his daughter, my little niece, caused a stir at infants school by singing Jack and Jill went up the hill for a little hanky panky, Jill came down with half a crown and swore it was a Yankee. When we heard that we all offered a silent prayer of thanks that she hadn't sung the one about the four and twenty virgins from Inverness. Yes, my brother had a vinyl LP (remember them?) called Bawdy Barrack Room Ballads, which he played endlessly.
Bless him, he died in 1993 of a brain haemorrhage. My niece now lives in the US with her husband and daughter, and her mum later moved out there to join them.
I don't think I would like to live in the US. Wherever you are you seem to get hurricanes, or droughts or wild fires. Plus extremes of temperatures and types of weather. At least in the U.K. in the geographical temperate zone we have a bit of variety but rarely is anything too much to bear. One life - your life - live it!8
