Virgin media

Recently I changed to Sky from Virgin for my TV & Broadband. When I phoned Virgin to confirm a months notice on the 19/06/17, I was told I would be charged £250 for coming out of my contract.
You can imagine I was shocked. I had been with Virgin for a long time and there was no talk about a contract. I did phone Virgin on the 25/01/2017 to see if I could reduce my payments as I do not watch Sports or films and the person said I would loose channels that I watch but could reduce my phone bill by £6.00 pm but once again they did not say this would effect my contract.
Since then I made another call to Virgin to ask what do I do with the box and details of my final bill. At first the guy said there was no record of me leaving but he then advised that he did find a phone call but nothing had been done. He then explain that I would be charged £186.75 for cancellation of my contract and I had been sent two e-mails, one on the 25/01/17 and the other 19/06/17 both explaining I was in a contract. I have checked my e-mails and have not received anything. his reply was that they have sent them and they must be in my spam messages. What a load of rubbish but you cannot argue.
What can I do as nobody from Virgin ever told me I was in a contract and there attitude was that's the new way of doing things.?

Unfortunately any change to the package means that VM will start you off on a new minimum term. This issue crops up regularly and is unrelated to moving outside their coverage area.0
