Leaving BT for Virgin Media

Apparently, if you want to leave BT without incurring a £31 disconnection charge you have to ask for a MAC code to give to your new provider.

Only problem is that you can't use a MAC code if your new provider is a cable company, i.e., Virgin Media.

Talk about a rip-off!! BT, never again...

Phil.

There is work involved at the exchange when a broadband connection is terminated. Not much work it's true but nobody works for nothing - especially Openreach.

The wholesale cease fee that is incurred because all service on the line is being stopped will get passed on to you - that's just the way it is. With everyone wanting a deal / cashback / prepaid mastercard/ the kitchen sink / uncle tom cobley and all with their broadband, margins are small providers can no longer absorb these costs.

Going back 5 years now, but I used a price increase to switch from BT to Virgin and wasn't charged a termination fee.

Probably not much use to OP, admittedly.
