Sadly, I have been signed off work for two weeks.
I live with my parents and they have suggested that I 'get away for a few days'....and I agree......where should I go?
I have a car, petrol and no desire to go to a beach. I'm quite happy to drive anywhere. I would love to go and see some museums but I'll need to stay somewhere! (maybe I should look at airbandb) I adored the 4 hours I got to spend in Oxford last year....where would you go and where would you stay
I am a single female. (Not that should make a difference anymore)
Thank you all in advance

I wouldn't recommend Oxford right now. At this time of year it is absolutely crammed with huge groups of teenagers on trips from around the world - everything is heaving including the pavements and it's just not a very relaxing place to be. I don't have a positive recommendayion, sorry!0

To some extent it depends on your starting point.
Oxford and Cambridge are both wonderful - I personally prefer Cambridge - or there are places like York, Liverpool, Canterbury, Edinburgh, all of which will vary in price for accommodation and all of which are busy all year round.
Youth Hostels might be another cheap option but they vary a lot in quality.
Good luck with making your decision.0 -
I think you need to put aside your preconceptions.....don't look for a place with museums!
Look for a place that is within your financial budget...and that is a nice relaxing place for your recuperation.
Then start looking at the local history of the area!
I live my the sea...we have a fair few tourists come for the beach here. There is also an large animal park and amusement park nearby.
However, many people miss the history of this town when they visit! Being a seaside town we have a string naval and fishing history...even some of the locals are surprised to hear that we have museums covering these areas! Walk along the old High Street and there are plaques (again often missed!) to tell you that Cromwell and his army stayed in some of the houses.
I suspect most towns in the UK will have a wealth of history you could explore. Look online...and maybe contact local libraries.
Hope you get to have a relaxing coupe of weeks!0 -

I suspect this might not be doable but what about the very North of Scotland? It's beautiful and you can find some lovely quiet places. The only down side is the roads may be busy and are often single track. Or what about Skye?
Depends what you are looking for really.
I'd be tempted to pop my tent in the car and see where I end upEmma

Depending where you are and what you're looking to spend - I recommend Bristol (I do live here though!!).
Museums, galleries, lots of parks and a lovely harbour area - all for free! And plenty of other things to do for a little bit of money. Amazing deals on independent restaurants (in the best food scene outside London - apparently) as well as chains.
You could also take a train/drive to Bath for a day and check there out easily. Or drive to nearby Cheddar Gorge and the countryside.
This coming weekend is the harbourside festival so it will be very busy and the weekend after has a street art festival called Upfest (but out of the centre so you wouldn't notice) but both of those are free if you don't mind crowds but lots of free music and entertainment etc then.
We looked at doing Airbnb at our place so know there's lots about! We live about a 30 min walk from town/45 mins to the shopping bit but there's a direct bus route at the end of our road that gets you there in 10/15 mins and when we looked people nearby were renting out a room for £40 a night.
Sorry, I've rambled. Happy to offer more advice if though if you're interested in the area0 -
Thank you all for your suggestions, I will need to do a little bit more thinking....you've come up with a few ideas that I hadn't thought of.
Viking_MFW- thank you for the tip about Oxford right now....I didn't even think about that!
hanb....I LOVE Bristol! I literally live just the other side of the Severn bridge so maybe I should just have a couple of days out in your beautiful city. I've been meaning to visit The arnolfini for years....Ooh, Ooh...Gloucester Road!
Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond, I really do appreciate it!0 -
I've been to Oxford in the high summer and its been fine!
In your position I'd plot a trip between Coventry for Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon (always lots to do in the summer) to the south Cotswolds via Oxford. If you have time, spend a day at Belnheim Palace. There are some amazing fruit picking farms in the area just waiting to be tasted!
Obviously don't push yourself too far physically. A break away from your usual routine and pleasing yourself will do you a great deal of good. I wish you a speedy recovery.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Hope is not a strategy...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!

North Wales, go to Conwy, Snowdonia, Betws y Coed!
It's easy to make a round trip. I'd suggest going north through Shropshire (Shrewsbury and Ludlow) and then up to Ironbridge, visit the Open Air museum at Blysts Hill. Go across to Chester and then on to North Wales. Portmeirion is definitely worth a visit.
As it's just you I would find local B&Bs or small hotels. I doubt they'll all be full.0 -
I`d go to a Buddist retreat ( you don`t need to be a Buddist) or how about a National Trust Working Holiday. I did one a little while ago in Wexham North Wales and you get plenty of free time.
Otherwise tour a bit and stay in hostelsMake £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.0
