Cooking for one (Mark Two)

No they are not I still have horror memories of between Christmas & New Year in 1995 or 96 (can't remember which) when it dropped to -17 and my neighbour who was away pipes' froze (twice) and flooded us. Kids and hamster got packed off to my parents my ex, my sis & self had to slog it out without heating or power munching on selection boxes, cooked ham and lots of wine!
I've had burst pipes twice, been flooded twice..compared to other 'stuff' I've endured in recent years, that was really just a walk in the park'I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore'0 -

Talk of some of those low temperatures - and that's just told me what I've been wondering ever since the central heating got sorted in this place and I looked at the thermostat and wondered why there was a night setting, ie as well as the day one I actually use so to say.
It takes a while for the penny to drop sometimes....after I'd just set it at 6 C and then left it alone.
The thought of some of those temperatures
EDIT; Just done quick check and lowest overnight temperature is forecast at 3C.0 -

I know my Pyrex jug fits in the SC, so I could do it in that and have a round one, at a push.
I just have a feeling that the heat generated by metal would make a better "crust" on the outside than other materials would.
I want it to retain its shape integrity ... and that "outside crust" would just make it all so much better.
I'll find something - no problem there - it's just annoying when you can't find "the perfect one" that is in your mind's eye
Or I could cook it in the oven (40 mins) .... but I am not overly comfortable running the mini oven for that length of time, I get "twitchy" after 20 minutes.
It's all part of the "stupid fears/phobias I have about everything".
how about washing out 2 baked bean tins and making 2 smaller nut roasts?I am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. Because it'd be awkward to get them out ... a jug's better/bigger/wider. There's a filling layer in it too, to take into consideration.
I could just end up buying a pack of tin foil things in £land - I bet they're small enough to fit. Takeaway foils.
There are many solutions ... but I want the closest to what I envisage as "correct".
It's just the way some things are. I don't know if that's for everybody, or is part of my awe-tism0 -

Well, I didn't plan that too well did I.... to control the heating here I twist the thermostat in the hallway when passing. At some point yesterday evening I turned it right down to "off", past the frost setting and until it hit the end stop. So I'd turned the heating off entirely. I'd thought "it's warm enough, I want to decide when I'm cold enough for it to come on again", which is how I do it...
Oops.
Oh well. It's not THAT cold here thank goodness. Everything outside is frozen solid though!
"Nothing to eat" in the house .... could/should go out but .... I can't find my gloves
Today I'll have to eat that beef curry I made on Saturday. Also "need" to pop out to get more of that beef for the freezer ...and some celery. Last day of the 39p price for celery is tomorrow but if I leave it until then they'll have probably sold out.0 -
I think I have decided to do "something utterly stupid". I believe that today I will venture out to £land to get the silicone chocolate moulds I saw the other day in there .... and I believe that I will get 3 bars of 30p chocolate from L1dl/4ldi and knock up some tree chocs myself.... wrapping them in common or garden cheap silver kitchen foil as that's all I've got and you can't buy thin sheets of festive foil for the purpose easily/cheaply/locally
Yes, I know....why faff around like that?
Dunno ....it's one of those things that grips you in the illusion that it's a good idea.
You know it'll end in tears and you'll wish you'd never started.
I know .... but it's "the grip of a whiff of something that seems achievable/desirable".
.... watch this space. Expect tears.0 -
Good morning,
Everywhere outside is still frozen solid but it due to thaw later and we'll be back to wind and rain!
I'm going to take the brave step of clearing out my spice cupboard later  I dread to think what might be lurking and how old it might be.
I had the usual toast for breakfast (no cheese spread mishaps this morning:)), I've some chicken left from last night so I'm defrosting a piece of baguette to have with it for lunch. Yesterday I pressure cooked a piece of boiling beef (short rib) for stock so tonight I'm going to de-fat and roast the meat and have it with mash & veg:)0 -
I had some leftover vegan chicken things from yesterday so I had a couple in some toast with lettuce and ketchup and my usual two cups of tea.:)
I'm not sure about lunch or dinner yet. I will probably have some fresh fruit in a minute.0
