Well I knew I'd think of an advantage to just how expensive the organic, etc food I tend to eat is if I pondered for long enough - and that is that I think twice, then thrice etc before I have any more food if I'm not hungry for it:rotfl:. So - no finishing up food just because it's there in my house - it gets shoved in the freezer quick for future reference....
The cost of having any food I don't actually need/particularly want tends to stop me in my tracks. Add the fact that sometimes money gets wasted from my experimenting - ie finding I've bought/made something that I have turned out to actively dislike and that's that money down the drain:(
On that note - intention is for another experiment tomorrow - I've had a packet of new-to-me type grain in my larder for a while. So maybe some amaranth for the first time tomorrow - I think probably with some roasted vegetables and tahini sauce. That would do for one meal - whilst I finish up the curry I have out for the other one. I'm working on getting to know every single food or recipe under the vegetarian or vegan heading there is in this country and what I think of it - to the extent of being able to walk into a newly-opened vegetarian/vegan restaurant or cafe even in the heart of London and say "Yep...been there/done that and know exactly what I think of it" to anything they might put on the menu...LOL. Just as well I've made the decision to add in a third exercise class each week - so it's dance, dance and more dance....gotta do something to exercise it all off again...
Finally thought of an advantage to "that awful job that I gritted my teeth to do for years prior to retirement" (ie in the Civil Service). That being I'm not in the slightest bit tempted by jam doughnuts, cream cakes, et al. They got hauled out on all possible occasions - birthdays, etc, etc - to the extent I got permanently fed-up with them - so can walk past them without a twinge these days.0 -
money, amaranth is one of the very best foods. I use the puffed grains as often as I remember, they are tiny and can get in between your teeth. I often mix a bit with spelt cereal for my breakfast or put some on berries for a topping before adding something a bit creamy, makes a nice pud.
I am on the last of my weekly pint of milk, new order is arriving this morning. I only buy organic food, whenever I can and non homogenised milk. All my tins and pasta etc are organic. I have eaten organic since I joined in a wholefood suma co-operative in 1978, there have been times when I could not afford organic so was always of the mind that vegetables of non-organic status are better than no vegetables. In those days I cooked lots of organic dehydrated soya and tvp. The book by rose elliot called `thrifty fifty` was actually a lifesaver at the time. I always managed a pud too, so would make something like butterbean and tomato pie with cheesy crust, roast potatoes and green veg, followed by stewed apple, topped with toasted almonds and something creamy like a tofu cream. Was very popular with husband and three children
Baked beans and an egg for breakfast today, on top of a small bit of spelt. No idea for the rest of today0 -
It's a bit nippy this morning. My room thermometer said it was 61, but I think the cold woke me up about 5am, so it was colder than that.
Heat or eat... I spent the heating money on yesterday's doughnuts
Doughnut > heating.0 -
Quick translation of temperatures - 16 Celsius approx - that's cold Pastures.
Are you a soup fan? I'm wondering about things like hot soups, warm throws to put over yourself, etc.
EDIT; I didnt realise you'd got a Facebook page Pastures - just found it....0 -
yes 16 is cold PN, time for bedsocks and an extra blanket
My bedroom got down to 17.4 at 6 am but I was very warm, even with a thin nightie, I put the extra layer on my bed a couple of weeks ago, made a big difference. Downstairs is 21 and right now I am feeling too warm after my breakfast, it is heating me up
I have had a think about my food and obviously the very heart of it is vegetables, then fruit, then protein. I have been a bit askew for a couple of days, hopping from meal to meal. I stopped planning on my daily `to-do` chart but no more, I became aimless. Lunch will be assorted veg, gently stir fried and topped with edamame pasta, then couple of nuts and chocolate. I am going make a soup for two days, for teatime, carrot and ginger and could add a bit of black bean pasta to that or mix in a bit of soft goats cheese. Sometime in the day I will have a berry bowl and some stewed apple
I am making the ice cream vanilla custard today, from very fresh eggs. Then it sits to get very cold in the fridge, all night. Actually making the ice cream is the easy bit, the potchy bit is the egg custard.0 -

95% of all my food comes from the magic box, and has done for over 30 years, so it's always been my default way of reviving them.
I do try to not buy them in the first place (usually one bag of 5 a year) ... and then eat them all ASAP.moneyistooshorttomention wrote: »....Facebook ...
I'd be good if my life were more interesting, food more varied, photos better lit0 -
Morning all, toast and cheeses spread just eaten . I think lunch will be eaten out today, as I'm going for a walk with friends through the plantations. Think I need to wrap up warm , woke up freezing and even after my shower feet are still frozen. I sat in a slither of sunshine, that I bagged before the cat ! With a throw over my feet.
On the subject of temperature, my house is always cold despite cavity wall and loft insulation, we added a wall to block the stairs from the living room, which helped. This morning the temp on my remote for the boiler which is sat in my living room, the warmest room, is 16 c now. I always thought that was a decent temp?? For outside anyway !! The boiler is new and I'm unsure what temp to have it set to kick in at. If anyone has any ideas . I currently don't have it set for morning as I'm not always in for long .
It's frosty and sunny so I think the walk will be lovely.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0 -
Good morning everyone,
Cold and frosty here this morning. I prefer a coolish bedroom so have the radiator in there turned very low but it was decidely chilly when I got up so I think I might need to turn it up a bit. I woke later again this morning but thankfully didn't get up feeling as though I'd just stepped off the waltzers:D.
I'm not CFO for a few days as my son comes home tonight. He has some holidays he needs to use up so is taking a couple of days to come home and service his car. He'll not be here until later so I'm going with an easy option of mince round, mash, veg and gravy. Lunch will be the last of the yellow split pea soup.
I'm not a great cake hand, like MTSTM probably too many years of them appearing every two minutes at work so I'm never tempted to buy doughnuts just for me. That said if someone was to plunk a Greggs' carmel custard doughnut or a freshly made ring one in front of me just now I'd thoroughly enjoy it. Every so often my Mum would make doughnuts for us kids, usually on a wet weekend and my Papa would always magically appear. I used to believe when he said he could smell doughnuts frying for miles but realised when I got older that my Mum used to phone him as she knew he loved them:rotfl:.0 -
Starving, but not worked out what to cook/eat for lunch. Don't want to go shopping for "new food", which'd be bread, eggs, milk as that just avoids eating up what I've got.
Spuds, cheese, beans I think.... as I've got those....
I'm slowly compiling a "list of the things I make with milk", which is, of course, a different list to things one COULD make. The list HAS to be "things I'd really get round to".... and then I can write the list out so that each time I have a pint in I don't forget how I could use it up.
I've only just remembered a bread recipe that uses milk that I keep meaning to make again .... but I never remember when I have milk in, only when I don't have it in. This is where powdered would be ideal, if I ever find it when I remember to look for it!0 -
Morning All. Lovely sunny but frosty here.
Banana on toast for breakfast and a small pack of mince out of freezer to make chilli concarne with the rest of yesterdays soup for dinner.
Pizza for lunch.
Off to the church Knit and natter for a couple of hours.Slimming World at target0
