I'm one more retired KK who saw the light and upgraded to Linux. Seriously, at my age I don't have time to waste on Windows updates. I do have W10 CU (using the PC's original Windows licence) in a virtual machine for the sole purpose of running Photoshop Elements, but that installed in minutes from a downloaded image. When the autumn CU comes along, I'll just repeat the process.

If you value your time and can't afford to have Windows quit on you to play with itself whenever it feels like it, you should know that linux upgrades generally take about 2 minutes and wait politely for you to do them at a time you choose.

I've never had an update disturb me, but then I am running Windows 10 Pro.
If you're running Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, you can delay the upgrade by at least four months. In version 1607, go to Settings > Update & security > Advanced options and click the Defer Feature Updates check box. That option moves your PC from the Current Branch (which gets feature updates as soon as they're released to the public) to the Current Branch for Business. With that option turned on, you will continue to get regular security updates but won't have to deal with that big upgrade for at least four months -- until Microsoft declares that it's ready for the Current Branch for Business.

If four months isn't enough, you can delay the upgrade even longer, by up to an additional 180 days from the time the Creators Update is released to the Current Branch for Business. To make that change, open the Local Group Policy Editor (Gpedit.msc) and navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Defer Windows Updates. Open the policy Select when feature updates are received, set it to Enabled, and then use the controls to choose your preferred branch and set a deferral period in days.

    Beware of this!

    It takes an eternity!

So if you have some important work to do, do not let your computer begin this update until you can leave it to do its thing for hours.

I am fuming. I needed to use my computer this morning and switched it on before breakfast to give it time to do its little updates etc before I needed to use it.

    But no.

    Microsoft had other ideas.

Yesterday, when I switched off, I chose the "Update and shut down" option thinking all would be ready today.

After breakfast, it was still only on 16% of its interminable update.

By the time I had to give up and leave, it was on 43% so I left it running on its battery because I didn't want to leave it wasting mains after the update had finished while I was out.

Returned this afternoon and it was only just then reaching 100%!

    All flamin' day!!!!!

How the bleep does Microsoft expect people to be able to use their computers?

They had the cheek to display these "helpful" messages:

Do not turn off your PC. This will take a while.
    You don't say!!!

We want everything to be ready for you.
    So do I!

Making sure your apps are good to go.
I don't care about the **&%@ apps, I just urgently need to check my email.

It's taking a bit longer than expected, but we'll get there as fast as we can.
A bit longer? Don't try to pretend there's a caring human behind this fiasco.

Come on microsoft... people have important things to do, you can't jut tie up their computers for hours on end with these updates - break them into smaller chunks, tell users how long the update needs and let them choose a time.

I have this now but can't see any difference from before

    Does anyone know what's diifernt?
