Mortgage deed - can bank employee witness?

My solicitor tells me they have sent the mortgage deed by post today. I need my signature witnessed by someone independent.
Issue is, I've just moved to a new area, where the only people I know are related to me. Left my old job last week and don't start my new one for a few weeks.
Short of asking some random person on the street for a signature(!), can I go into the bank branch (with whom the mortgage will be provided by) and ask them to witness the document?

Can't you ask one of your relatives' next door neighbours? As far as I know anyone can witness the signature, as it's only proving they saw you sign it...0

Yes. Or any other bank where you have an account would likely agree to do this.0

I did.
That was HSBC some banks may not let their staff do it.0 -
Just been to a branch of the lender (Halifax). The person on the counter said tellers are not able to witness or certify documents. She fetched the mortgage advisor who refused to do it as Halifax are a party to the transaction. I asked if they'd sign if it were another lender and they said no (even though I have several accounts with Halifax).
Trying all the neighbours now. The first two I tried refused on the basis "there are a lot of scams around these days". Sigh.0 -
where are you? I'll do it.0

Are your local relatives actually connected to the transaction in some way (e.g. going to be living with you or providing money)? If not then they ought to be fine, you don't need to declare to anyone that it's actually e.g. your cousin who witnessed.
Or if you're not working for a few weeks, why not take a daytrip to wherever you do know some potential witnesses!0 -
I a colleague at work to do mine.0
-
You could ask one of your former colleagues or a neighbour of one of your relations?0

I did mine yesterday, bombed down to the corner shop and got the lady behind the counter to do it. Deed was in post by return!0

Can you not travel back to your previous area and get ex colleague or neighbour or frimd to witness it ?0
