  • Yesterday I bought the steak, shower gel and blackberries at Whole Foods - $16.41. That brings me to $109.29/$150.00.

Believe it or not, I actually feel like having soup. Even though it seems silly, I kind of want it. I'll use the final chicken leg quarter in a soup for dinner tonight. There's no celery in the house but I'll make due with shredded carrots, onions, garlic for aromatics.

Thanks everyone for your responses, sharing your motivations for doing the grocery challenge. I appreciate it.

  • nothing to report back on balances yet as am collecting them and then having a tally once a week, but am definitely more aware of what I am spending

but (as the title says) is it just me that when they are struggling mentally to keep on track they have to make it into a game in order to get through a wobble?

my situation is we need to pay debts off, I am also fully aware that we still have an interest only mortgage that needs to be tackled in the next 9 years but OH has absolutely no urgency over the debts (luckily he doesn't actually spend anything so don't have that to worry about) but he leaves the majority of the money (and 100% of the worry to me) and sometimes the only way to get through it is to make it a game - makes it feel like I'm not struggling but choosing to get it as low as possible (if that makes sense ??)

what annoys me the most is that 4-5 years ago I had all debts sorted and paid off, husband got depression and stress because of work result he has horrid to live with and knocked my self confidence so much and I took my eye off the ball and spent so much taking the kids for days out so that they had a break from the atmosphere at home, comfort eating and so here we are 5 years down the line back to square one and trying to get head around it all over again (I make OH out to be bad, he really isn't, because he has never done the finances (I started doing them when I was SAHM) he doesn't understand the urgency to get it straight again

    sorry for rambling post x

OK, nappies and pears yesterday bought in Lidl - £4.88.

This morning, I bought eggs and fabric softener, also in Lidl - £3.70.

    New total £275.71/£300.

Am making DH more scotch eggs tomorrow night, for his weekend away fishing with his Dad for his birthday. We've still got some breakfast bars left over from the last shop I did for his last fishing trip, so don't need to buy anymore of those. Fingers crossed he doesn't need anything else.

We're having spag bol tonight (Bolognese made previously and frozen), with garlic bread. I still haven't bought any lunches this month, so I am really happy about that! The freezer is still very full! I also haven't bought any ready made stuff for DD this month, and we're still working through the last batch of stuff I made her and should do us for another few days and plenty of ingredients indoors to make the next batch at the weekend.

I think we will do pizza again tomorrow night, so will need some mozzarella for that as we've run out, and some fresh basil and rocket, and I'll need to whiz up another sauce but also have ingredients in for that. And I think I will have meatloaf with tatties and veg on Friday night (as DH will be heading out as soon as I get home), and I can eat out of the freezer all weekend too.

Should only need to top up milk and fruit over the weekend. And I'm going to try making my own bread this weekend with chapatti flour as I've still got masses of that to work through! haha. It worked well with the pizza base recipe, so fingers crossed!

  • The weekly shop is now done, and so a further £31.12 to add. I say weekly, but it should hopefully see us through 10 days, as long as certain people in the household obey the meal plan and don't decide to eat all the bread one night when they come home drunk from the pub.

I also got a refund from my Appr0ved F00d order from earlier this month. They'd missed some things out of the delivery, and it was packaged so badly that a tub of flour burst and covered everything. They've refunded me £12, which was more than I expected, so that's now been knocked off my grocery spend, leaving me at £76.08/200 for the month so far.

I've been really naughty the last few days... :(

I've spent a total of £50.57 since last week, in 5 shops. Got loads for my money, but cross with myself as only about £4 of it was actually needed! The rest was mega bargains, that will be used, but weren't needed now. Still, I suppose it will save me some money later in the year... She says, trying to look on the bright side!!

    Will update signature now.

Grocery challenge for family of three - me, dd(12) and ds(11), feeding dp 2 or 3 x a week too. Only food, not toiletries. Jan £87.97/£100 Feb £0/£100
Frugal 2018 needed! Saving and NOT spending
  • I'm doing the challenge as I decided to retire early, due to many reasons, mainly seeing friends and family becoming seriously ill / dying and realising I had one life and had to make the most of it as I would never know when it was my turn to kipper it! Also becoming seriously pee'd off with people I worked with taking credit for what I did. I have an ageing mother who needs care and also three grandchildren who I look after to enable my lovely daughters to work. I LUURRRRVE food and cooking but spend far too much on it. I need to cut back on costs as I told my other half we could afford for me to reitre ......... :rotfl::rotfl:
