I was considering listing a few things on Ebay today in the hope to make a few pounds for Christmas but I was wondering if I could except payment by paypal and if so how much would it cost me? Am I better to just accept cheques, cash and postal orders like I normally do?

Accepting just cheque & postal order will limit your buyers. Do not list auctions for cash payment or eBay will boot them off.
Paypal charges are listed on their website, they can be a bit high for low value items by the time you have paid listing fees.0 -
The items I am for listing are ending up between £8.50 and £9.50 at the moment on Ebay, how much would I end up paying for accepting paypal?0

many people , me included, search for items using the criteria 'paypal accepted' so would never even see a non paypal item.
Ultimately though it is up to individuals as to whether or not to accept paypal, I do as I prefer the ease and speed of transactions, but if you don't want to then don't.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I prefer to be able to pay by Paypal myself.0 -
I'll only use paypal on ebay.
Recently | won a bottle of Opus one for £89 +p&p (normal restaurant prices vary between £300 & £600 per bottle)
So when I won I was over the moon. Only after a month nothing had arrived from the states & I couldn't get in touch with the seller.
Two weeks later Paypal refunded me.:T

BTW, cash is ok only if the buyer is collecting.
And if the buyer is collecting, you'd be crazy to accept any other type of payement. (Other than bank transfer, but that's not gonna happen!)My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
Thanks for all of the above. As per a previous thread I'm considering using Paypal so all this info is a real help.0

I'm assuming that was a bottle of bubbly...?
If so, I'm surprised the listing lasted the full duration! (No alcohol on ebay, right?)My TV is broken!

Ebay like people to think that accepting paypal boosts sales, however just as many people who have been burnt by paypal are put off by sellers who only take paypal.
Given that this is a money saving forum, paying an extra 4% or so on all your sales seems needless...
If you are selling something that people are keen to own (the only real way to make money on ebay) then people will pay by virtually any means.0
