What kind of insect is this?

Saw what looked like a giant beetle but with spiders legs. Any idea what it is? Seems to be hiding (along with spiders) in my storage cupboard in hall.

I hope not, though looked like a spiders legs with a beetle shell just a beetle size of spider.

    Worried a bit now.

How many legs? If it had six, it was a spider that had two legs stolen. If it had eight, it was the leg-thief beetle.

Both are deadly. Luckily, they only hunt each other!

Im thinking it is a cockroach, I felt something crawl on my back about 10 minutes ago and grabbed it and chucked it, and whe it was upside down it looked like bent legs and scuttering type.

I did think that but both times it was too quick for me to get picture but got one just before I left.

From what I remember when I saw it it looks the most likely if so wow! Didn't realise they were an endangered species, and seems quite impressive how I live near Glasgow and they are meant to be rare if not extinct up here.

Seems to me those facts point to it not being a Stag beetle!

In fact, I'd rule Stag beetles out.

The dark picture refuses to be tweaked to reveal much more, but from what's there, I couldn't find evidence of the long antennae typical of cockroaches.
