Buying foreign currency with a credit card

Hi.
I was wondering if there are any extra charges when buying foreign currency using your credit card. For example, if I was to rock up to the currency bureau in a Tesco store, and used my Amex or Barclaycard, would the credit card company hit me with any hefty fees? I have searched online for advice, but I'm still a little confused. I have a BA Amex card, and was hoping that I might earn some Avios when buying Turkish Lira for an upcoming holiday. I just don't know whether they treat buying foreign currency in the same way as withdrawing money from an ATM, which of course I know comes with big fees.
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies. And apologies if this thread has come up before (I promise I did try to search for an existing thread).

It's treated as a cash advance, the same as an ATM withdrawa andl with the same fees etc.
Why spend more buying cash lire instead of using a fee-free card when you're in Turkey?:
