Well thanks for the contributions - I was asking if the compensation was good enough, and what other avenues could possibly be explored.
I'm taken aback by the cynicism - I'm a senior professional who's undertaking the work of pursuing this case on behalf of my low-earning friend who would not be able to navigate his way round the system for proper restitution.
So why people have to immediately leap to thinking that my friend is mythical is incomprehensible to me. If this wasn't a dreadful experience as deemed by some, I don't know what would be. To imply that a sincere request for advice leads to an implication that I'm greedy, see the pound signs in eyes and that I'm less realistic & honest than some unknown poster of the thread is all hurtful and says something of the society we live in.
It seems that Argos' offer is fair as judged by most and so I'll go along with it. I have no wish to go to Small Claims. I may try to push for more than £75 for my friend, as some have suggested0 -

It's a bit worrying that you're giving advice and yet don't know the difference between the words dodgy and doggy!0 -

It blows up on day one, leaving the kitchen in a mess, and several hours of cleaning. On inspection of the product, Argos admits blame and offers a poultry 75 quid. Not reasonable enough my friend, hell no!!
To the OP, talk to your CAB and also your local trading standards office to see what they have to say, never accept the first offer of compensation.
Also, how was the product returned back to Argos, did you have to return it yourself??? Cab fare, petrol money, etc.... also your time............talk to local C A B, not enough.
Where does it say in the OP's post that the damage was caused by an exploding chicken? No free lunch, and no free laptop0
