Be careful when filling your own bottles/containers using public water fountains, in general people touch the outlet of the fountain with the bottle and if the bottle has not been cleaned they are spreading there own germs onto the fountain and on to your bottle, I use a hotel in Fuerteventura that allowed this practice but when we went this year it has been stopped for health reasons, I only used it on one holiday and it was the only time I have ever had s stomach bug at the hotel ? next time you see one been used for this observe the contact of the outlet ?
I use this site every week and saved £'s over the months but my opinion this is not good advice by ML today 05.07.2017 for the above and health reasons for adults and children.

I'm with Jon2408 on this one.

I'd think carefully about the potential savings of, what, £1 - £1.50 for a bottle of water? especially if you have a compromised immune system. Water fountains and the bowls are potentially a breeding ground for various bacteria, and if you don't wan't to risk catching an infection of any kind, then i would advocate in this instance, to just buy a bottle of water. There are various people who have to be aware of health risks, and although this might sound excessive to some people, use your own discretion when using public water fountains.

There are some instances unfortunately, when you have to weigh up saving money v health risks.

Some Bottled water is absolutely full of bacteria ...

I prefer tap water and as an added bonus less plastic waste . Save the planet.:j

I know from experience of my time as a volunteer in Africa about untreated water ......

But UK airports if we follow the basics you will be fine.

So when using a water fountain be prepared have an already clean water container with you .
run the fountain for several seconds and do not touch the faucet ( nozzle )

Bottled water in countries like U.K. Is the biggest con ever, as well as an environmental nightmare.

I'm quite baffled about how the OP thinks this is anything to do with Site Feedback, when there are ample appropriate threads in forums that will actually reach people interested in the subject more effectively?

I think because it was a topic covered in MSE's email newsletter thing, which was where it caught my attention.

I remembered seeing a drinking water tap for the first time ever at Heathrow just through security, so was pleased to get the link to the airport maps showing the locations of drinking water taps.
I now take empty drinking bottles with me...... the sort you can safely drink from longterm.

I've found the MSE information about water fountains at UK airports very useful - we always take empty bottle through security and try to fill them up and have not had problems to date (touch wood!). I have just found the website below with information about water fountains at airports around the world:

    wateratairports.com

(sorry, as a new MSE forum user it's not letting me lost this as a link)

    I hope this is useful.
